Baby Adoption
When a couple first begins to explore the idea of adopting a child, they are often first asked if they prefer to adopt an older child or a newborn or infant. While some couples choose to adopt an older child (usually through a state foster care authority or internationally), many couples want to experience all the joys and excitment that a newborn or infant can bring.
However, one common myth found today is that it is very difficult to adopt a healthy baby domestically -- which is untrue. Although domestic adoption statistics are not tracked by the U.S. government on an annual basis, there were 22,291 unrelated (in other words, excluding step parent and other family adoptions) domestic adoptions in 2002. In addition, Adoptive Families magazine currently estimates the annual number of infants adopted domestically (excluding foster and relative adoption) to range from 25,000 to 30,000 -- more than adopted from all international countries combined.
