I am a birth mother who used this site to find adoptive parents. My baby was adopted almost a year ago and I have an open adoption agreement with her parents. Because open adoptions are not 'standard' and in MOST states, they are not legally recognized (including mine, which is Virginia) the topic is very hard to pin down. The verbal agreement I have with my daughter's parents is that we all want to do what is best for her, although these people have huge hearts and have allowed me to do what I need to for myself as well. I have visited her 3 times in the last year and the parents I found here are very good about sending pictures and letting me see her. The biggest problem is 'open' can mean very different things to different people. Fortunately, so far, we have agreed on what it means, but that could change in the future and I would have no legal recourse if they back out of our verbal agreement. However, I knew that going in, so if they change their minds or their daughter decides she wants nothing to do with me, I can accept that. It would be hard, but I think I found the right people for us. If you contact AA, they will send you profiles of people that are willing/want open adoptions and they will tell you the level of openness as well. Mine is fully open - my daughter and her parents have left the state, but we keep in touch directly via email, telephone and snail mail. So don't rule out this site in your search just because the issue is not addressed online. If you talk to someone, they can give you that information.
