Pam is correct in what she's saying, but the laws about what needs to take place with the birth father signing can also dpened on what state you are in. An agency or attorney in your home state will know exactly how to handle it legally.

My understanding is that there is something called due dillegence and there must be an attempt made to contact the father to receive consent for adoption. After the attempt is made the father has thirty days to consent or contest, if no contact is made they will assume he doesn't contest. If he does contest he will have to appear before a judge and will be asked to provide information as to whether or not he supported the mother during pregnancy. If due dilligence is not made to try to contact him he can contest the adoption within the first 5 years of the childs life.

does the father have to be ok with the adoption? can i do sign on my own or do i need him to sign as well?
