Amy: I also have 2 bio daughters & also feel pulled towards adoption. The first step is to decide what type of child will fit into your family -- infant? older child? same race? foreign? can you handle medical problems? sibling group? The second question is to consider finances -- if you are interested in an infant (domestic or foreign) you are looking at anywhere from $10K-$35K. The government has subsidies for adopting African American and bi-racial babies, so some of these adoptions are under $15K. Next step for an infant is to research agencies and start your homestudy. For an older child or a sibling group, you may want to research your state social services agency (which is also free in most states). In Kansas alone there are 1500 children waiting for adoption -- while most of these children are over 8 years old or in sibling groups, there are children of all ages. Many states have websites with photolistings of children (younger children that are easily/quicly adopted don't always appear on these websites, but they are available). Check out "Adopt U.S. Kids" website for state by state photolistings. We decided to become foster parents while we are waiting to adopt. Please email me if you have any questions -- if you are in Kansas I can give you lots of info and referrals. Best of luck to you!
