For Birth Parents

Expectant mothers who are looking to join an adoption program at American Adoptions should begin by requesting information about the adoption process. They can also call 1-800-Adoption to speak with a specialist who can explain the adoption process. The specialists will be able to answer any questions that may be specific to a woman’s situation.

All adoption programs are free for birth mothers. Birth parents should not consider adoption programs that pressure birth parents into making a decision about choosing adoption, and the agency should counsel expecting mothers about their legal rights during the adoption process and the relinquishment. Also, it is important that birth mothers choose an adoption program that allows them to determine the level of contact they wish to have with the adoptive family, including an open adoption.

American Adoptions offers Domestic and International adoption programs to choose from.  Adoptive families should evaluate each adoption program offered by an agency thoroughly. They should also place close attention to what is included in each program since many adoption professionals may have lower costs because they do not include services such as advertising, legal work or counseling.

American Adoption’s fees include the following:

• 24 hour birth parent counseling

Domestic Adoption Programs

American Adoptions offers three types of domestic adoption programs, or programs for the adoption of a child born in the United States.

TRADITIONAL ADOPTION PROGRAM

The Traditional Program is for adoptive families who wish to adopt a Caucasian child, who may or may not have an ethnic heritage of Hispanic, Asian or Native American.  The average wait time is 3 to 9 months for this adoption program.

AGENCY ASSISTED

The Agency-Assisted Program is for adoptive families who wish to adopt an African-American child or bi-racial child of African American descent. The average wait time for this adoption program is 1 to 6 months.

IDENTIFIED ADOPTION PROGRAM

The Identified Program is for adoptive families and birth mothers who have already connected and committed to an adoption. American Adoptions will support the adoptive family and birth mothers with legal assistance, counseling, and any other support needed to finalize the adoption.

International Adoption Programs

American Adoptions has formed a partnership with Americans Adopting Orphans, an agency founded by Dave and Cindy Ptasnik, who adopted both of their children from China. Through this partnership, American Adoptions is able to provide both domestic and international adoption services. Americans Adoption Orphans is a non-profit, Hague-accredited agency that is dedicated to providing trustworthy services to Americans who wish to help the many orphaned and abandoned children in foreign countries. Completing an International Adoption program can be very confusing and frustrating for families because of country laws dictating the specifics of the adoption and the complexity of the paperwork. Americans Adopting Orphans provides services throughout the family’s adoption journey, including preparing the family for the overseas journey and stay. Americans Adopting Orphans provides adoption programs in China, Ukraine and Burundi.
