There are many types of adoption professionals that offer a wide range of adoption services – including adoption law firms, adoption law centers, adoption facilitators and local and national adoption agencies.
A local adoption agency is an adoption agency that services birth parents and adoptive families in one specific town or small geographic area.
For Birth Mothers
A local adoption agency can provide a birth mother adoption services, however not to the extent as some other adoption professionals, such as a
national adoption agency.
A local adoption agency often has a very limited outreach – meaning they only serve families within their state or geographic area, resulting in less adoptive families to choose from. While a local adoption agency may have staff to help counsel, support and help birth parents form an adoption plan, this limited outreach often means limited choice for the birth parents. Birth parents with a very specific list of characteristics they want in an adoptive family for their baby, or who want the freedom to choose a family from a wide variety of potential adoptive families, may not be able to find the "perfect" family within a local adoption agency's limited list of available families.
Additionally, local adoption agencies often have a small Social Services Department, which may or may not be available to birth parents after hours, on the weekends, holidays, etc.

For Adoptive Families
A local adoption agency can offer adoptive families a wide range of adoption services, however often do not have the same level of outreach as a
national adoption agency.
A local adoption agency often services a small geographic area or specific state. While they often locate birth parents on their own, due to the limited scope of a local adoption agency, waiting times for adoptive families are often inconsistent. Local adoption agencies also are more susceptible to negative statewide adoption stories and changes in state laws, whereas national adoption agencies focus their services across the nation – resulting in more accurate wait times and stability of service.
