Why We Chose Adoption
Our Family

We are surrounded by friends who have adopted children, including Susan's best friend, her mentor and several friends at church, work and with whom we grew up. Our nephew's long-time girlfriend (who we hope he will marry someday) is also adopted. In every case, we see how the children are loved immeasurably by so many people, especially in open or semi-open adoptions. Those friends with transracial or international adoptions celebrate with us the unique heritages of their children. And each of them has given us tremendous support and advice as we enter our adoption journey. We know we'll be sharing our experience as adoptive parents with them too.

Even before our daughter was born, adoption was in the back of our minds. We had seen the wonderful families built through adoption in many of our friends' lives. By God's grace, we were able to conceive and give birth to our daughter. As we attempted to have a second child with the help of many doctors, we discovered that we suffered from secondary infertility and would not be able to have another biological child. Because adoption was never out of the realm of possibility, it was easy to make that leap of faith to find our next child through adoption. We know that there is a child out there that God has created with us in mind and we're ready to accept them and love them as much as we love our daughter.

What Makes Us Unique
Mom and Kaitlyn Trying to Keep Warm at an ICE Exhibit

According to our daughter's teacher, we are unique in that we take our daughter with us wherever we go. Whether we go to a festival, a four-star restaurant, the symphony, a sporting event, vacation or just running daily errands, she is part of the activity. The next child we bring into our family will be as much a part of this as our daughter is. Not only do we believe that exposing our children to a wide range of experiences will benefit them, it is also so much FUN! We become little kids again as we see the world through their eyes. We love teaching our daughter about everything around her and are excited to let her try many "firsts." While some people crave a vacation away from their children, we cannot wait to share new adventures and new experiences with our children. Our daughter's teacher says that in all her years of teaching, she's never known someone who has incorporated their child's life into their own so completely.

Our Leisure Time

Most of our leisure time is spent doing things as a family. We love to travel, see new places and try new adventures. Our community offers many wonderful opportunities for fun and relaxation. Whether it is playing in a nearby park, swimming at the pool, visiting animals at a horse farm, attending a sporting event, going to the zoo or museums, or hiking a nature trail, there's always something fun to do. We also have a solid network of friends with children our daughter's age and younger with whom we get together. Individually, Susan loves to scrapbook about all the events of our life. And Mike is a master carpenter and computer gamer. We use our individual hobbies as way to have "me" time while the other has one-on-one time with our daughter for special "dates" or dinners. The next child we bring into our family will also be included in special occasions like these.
