Adoption has played a significant role in Randy's family. Both of Randy's parents were adopted: His Dad was adopted as an infant, and his mother and aunt, when they were young girls. It has always been an important part of the family history. This life experience was especially helpful to the family when Randy's sister made the loving decision to place her son for adoption after she became pregnant at a very young age. It was comforting for her to know that an adopted child can have a life full of love, happiness, and stability. Three years ago it was a very exciting time for us when Michael chose to contact the family and we met him for the first time as an adult. He is a successful, well-adjusted young man with a lifetime of wonderful memories. He, his wife, and three children remain an important part of our family today.
Our favorite thing about being married is sharing our family traditions with each other and creating new ones of our own. Both Randy and Leslie have always celebrated holidays with large family gatherings, and enough food to feed everyone three times over.
In Leslie's family, the Christmas season starts with the family trekking through the fields to cut down the perfect Christmas tree. A formal dinner on Christmas Eve marks the beginning of the celebration. Christmas morning means opening presents around "the biggest Christmas tree ever, " before joining the extended family for the Christmas Day meal. When New Year's Day rolls around we enjoy a traditional Eastern European food, Sarma. Making the stuffed cabbages is a labor of love, that connects us to our past.
In Randy's family, food traditions are also an important part of celebrations. No holiday is complete without his grandmother's hot German potato salad. A New Year's Eve Fondue party has been a favorite tradition for most of Randy's life. Randy's family is blessed with a large number of birthdays and anniversaries in January, giving us another great reason to get together for "The January Affair." More recently, a tradition of a hayrack ride and bonfire in October, was started by Randy's sister.
We've created a few new traditions of our own. Last year we hosted our First Annual Chili Cook-off and we have received many requests for a "rematch" this year. We can't wait to create even more new traditions with a child one day.
Although both of us have successful careers, we value spending our free time together. We take time to sit down for dinner together and talk about our day, our dreams, and the funny things that happen to us. We work great together as a team, especially in the kitchen when making a dinner, or cooking a special meal for our friends.
