How Adoption Changed Our Lives

We'll never forget the first time we met Amanda. She was nine months old. We had traveled for two days to get to the orphanage in the middle of Russia. We were waiting in a large room that had only two chairs in it and after about a half hour, a nurse came into the room holding Amanda. Jill was the first to hold her. Her eyes lit up and she smiled bigger than she ever had before. You could tell she would never let anything happen to Amanda. Then it was time for Joe to hold Amanda. She looked up at him with her big beautiful eyes. It was in that moment that she stole his heart. From those moments on, we were a family.

Amanda has brought us closer to each other in ways we never imagined. As we work together to raise Amanda, we've learned a lot about ourselves and our families. We try to pass on good values as we teach her right from wrong. She has grown so much from that first day. Throughout our journey and into the future, we will never forget the people who helped to bring us together; the nurses and caregivers at the orphanage, the adoption agency and many, many others. We were never allowed to contact Amanda's birth parents, however, they will forever be part of our family by their gift of allowing a couple from across the world to adopt and raise their child.

What We’ll Tell the Child About Their Adoption

We feel very strongly about sharing your child's adoption story with them. As we build our family through adoption, we realize how important it is for your child to know that you will always love them. Your child will know how hard it was for you to make the decision to allow us to become their parents but that it was the love you had for them that made this decision possible. The story of your child's adoption will be blended with our family history; one cannot be told without the other. One of our daughter's favorite bedtime stories is one we based on her adoption. We would love to share a new story with your child. To share this journey, we will also be making a life book that tells their story. We would like to include pictures or a note, sharing with them some of your hobbies, likes and dislikes, from you.

What We Like to Do

Docking in the Bahamas

We like to do many things together including walks, picnics, bowling and playing cards. We also like to do things on our own. Joe likes to golf and watch sports when he hangs out with friends. He is also a very good handyman. Each weekend he has his new list of projects to do around the house. Jill likes to read and watch movies. She loves to bake with our daughter.

They also love to play with our dog Casey. Casey, our Labrador Retriever, has been a great "big sister" for Amanda. They play together everyday and it is Amanda's chore to give Casey carrots in the morning and treats at night. Casey protects Amanda and our house by watching out our front window and barking at anything that moves. She is very good with kids and adults. Through the years we have had Casey, she has become part of our family and our home.

Probably one of our most favorite things to do is vacation. On a recent trip to Arizona to visit Jill's family, we took a drive out to New Mexico to surprise her cousins at their college graduation. It was a great opportunity to see the west and to get caught up with part of the family that we rarely see. Amanda met aunts, uncles and cousins that she has never met. On the drive, we were able to see beautiful scenery. One of the things we value most is the natural landscape America has to offer. There isn't anything like it in the world.

While we love visiting family and scenery, it is hard to beat a relaxing vacation. On a recent cruise, we spent most of the time relaxing by the pool, playing games and watching art auctions. Once we got into port, we played on the beach by day and shopped by night. Having a family vacation where we all have fun together is very important to us and a great way to keep our family close.
