Our Childhood Memories
Hiking in Italy

Jennifer's parents loved to sail and owned a small sailboat. Many of her summers growing up were spent going camping, hiking and sailing. Her dad always had a large garden when she was growing up, which she helped him maintain, weeding and picking vegetables. Her dad grew and preserved enough vegetables to feed his family through the winter. Jennifer's childhood experiences impacted her love of the outdoors, her interest in the environment and a commitment to eating healthily. Borg's family was always very active. He had a happy childhood and definitely does not remember ever being bored. Growing up with a single mother meant that his family did not have a lot of money. However, his mom was full of energy and still found ways to provide her boys lots of wonderful opportunities. Borg and his brother were always on the swim team and traveled to many races in the region. During the winters his mom worked on the weekends as a ski instructor and race coach at a nearby mountain where they made many great friends and ski raced competitively.

What we do in our Leisure Time
Sailing with Borg's Family

Our house is usually an active place. We enjoy cooking with friends and neighbors and having family-style dinners together. We both have lots of hobbies. As a child, Borg was very involved in music and continues to play drums and guitar today. On the weekends we sometimes play music together, Borg on the guitar and Jennifer on the mandolin. Jennifer also enjoys doing pottery or knitting in her free moments. She taught herself how to use the potter's wheel in college and recently set up a small studio. We also love to be active on the weekends, skiing, juggling, or hiking together. Each week the local college near our home has a family juggling night. Its a fun weekly event and we often go with our close friends and their children. The kids love it because they have lots of wonderful and funny performers, as well as juggling lessons for those who want to learn.

How We Will Address Cultural Diversity
Jennifer with Friends in Ecuador

We know that having a child of another race will be a challenging experience. However, we both seek out diversity in our lives and feel that we can support our child in developing a strong sense of his/her cultural and ethnic identity. Both of us have jobs where we work with diverse populations. In addition, Jennifer is a member of the diversity alliance at her university and volunteers mentoring and tutoring with African teenagers. We both travel overseas each year for either work or pleasure and we have both spent time immersed in other cultures. We have friends of different races that can serve as positive role models for our child and we plan to seek out experiences where our child can be surrounded by role models from his/her ethnic or racial background.
