Our favorite place to spend time and vacation is at our family cottages on the lake. Our cottages are about 30 minutes from our house and we go there every weekend with the pets. Hilary's parents also have a cottage right next door, so we spend time with them each weekend. We enjoy relaxing in the hammock, kayaking, swimming in the lake taking our dog Max for walks and cooking with our family. Hilary's sister and niece also spend time there, so there are always lots of kids there. We entertain friends and their children there as well. At night, we usually play cards, Yahtzee and Chinese Checkers. The cottages are surrounded by conservation land, so there are many trees, lakes and fresh air. The road to the cottages just got paved a few years ago! It is where Hilary grew up, so there are many favorite, happy childhood memories there. It is the perfect place to relax, have fun and enjoy childhood.
Adoption has personally affected our family. About 30 years ago, Brett's sister made the difficult decision to place her child for adoption. Brett is 6 years younger than his sister and remembers this time in his life well. He remembers how difficult it was for his sister and his family. At that time, the majority of the adoptions were closed adoptions. About 3 months ago, this child, David, who is now 31 years old - found Brett and his family. It has been a very exciting time for everyone and each person has embraced him. Brett has already spoken to him on the phone many times, as he lives in another country. We have been able to share pictures and more frequent communication through the internet. We have a new nephew and can't wait to meet him!
One of our family traditions is to celebrate Epiphany - little Christmas. Each year, we host Epiphany at our house. We decorate the house in gold and silver stars and have everyone over. Some of the fun part about the celebration is we bake cupcakes and bake a little baby Jesus in one of the cupcakes. After dinner, each person gets to pick a cupcake - starting with the oldest in the family to the youngest, with the baker always picking last. Whoever gets the cupcake with baby Jesus in it, gets a little Christmas gift. We also wear colorful paper crowns which looks a little silly, but it is our tradition! We do this every year and it is a nice holiday for us to all get together...without any pressure of buying gifts!
One of our other family traditions is to dress up for Halloween. Brett and I dress up with our niece and even the dog gets dressed up! Our niece picks what she is going to be and then we surprise her by dressing up within her theme. We go out in our neighborhood where the dog gets lots of dog treats and attention from the kids. Over the years, this has been a really nice tradition that we have all shared together.
