After having our daughter, Emma, we knew we were destined to have a large family. After all, Melissa is a former preschool teacher who loved her students as her own and dreamed about staying home and raising our own children. After finding out we cannot have any more biological children, we thought long and hard about all of our options. At different times over the past couple of years, we have discussed adoption as a way to continue to build our family. We liked the idea of helping a child who needed us as much as we need him or her. We watched Melissa's cousin and her husband adopt a child through American Adoptions and we were amazed at what a miracle adopting a child truly is. We knew we had our answer and could not wait to start the process of adoption!
We plan on making adoption an open topic in our family from day one. We never want this child to have a moment when they "discover" they were adopted. It will never be a secret, rather just something they always knew. Adoption is an amazing gift, and we want the child to feel positive thoughts and emotions on the topic from an early age. Therefore it only seems natural to be open and have adoption be a part of our family life. Melissa has already bought some amazing children's books about adoption that we plan to read to your child. We also want to share the child's own personal adoption story with him or her and let them know how much their birth mother loves them and what an ultimate sacrifice she made.
To us, being parents means putting someone else's needs and wants before our own. Once you are a parent you become the leading source of love, guidance and support for your child. It is a huge responsibility and one that we don't take lightly. While parenting is at times hard work it also gives our life wonderful meaning and fulfillment!
We both take on different roles in our parenting. Melissa is a planner by nature and she is already thinking up themes and locations for the child's first birthday party! She is very hands on and absolutely loves being a stay-at-home mom to make sure she doesn't miss the important things in life. She wants to be the one to witness the first steps, to volunteer for the field trips and to make sure she is home after school to welcome the kids and talk about their day over snacks.
Josh grew up as an only child, and while he had an incredible childhood he wants nothing more than for Emma to experience the gift of a sibling. Having studied abroad during law school, he envisions traveling as a family and watching the children experience other cultures and countries.
We hope we have the opportunity to share all we have to offer with your child. We promise to invest our unconditional love, commitment, time and patience with your child.
What Melissa Admires About Josh:
Josh and I met during college when our friends set us up on a blind date. This was not just any blind date, but a cowboy themed party. From that first night I fell in love with Josh's funny and laid back personality. How could I not have? He was wearing chaps and carrying a lasso! I also love that Josh is a go with the flow type of guy and has more patience than any person I know. Maybe all that patience is what helps him be an amazing and involved father. Josh is the type of Dad who not only plays princess with Emma but actually wears the tutu and tiara. She is so lucky to have him for a Daddy!
What Josh Admires About Melissa:
I fell in love with Melissa for two main reasons: her compassionate heart and her generosity. She is the type of person who would give you the shirt off her back and not think twice. Melissa adopts a family in need every Christmas and carefully plans out all the gifts for the children. She is an animal lover who's dream is to one day start a shelter for abandoned dogs. She cries at ASPCA commercials and I love that about her. Everything she does is for her family, she's the best Mom you can imagine.
