We have seen and experienced the joys of adoption numerous times. Three of Paula's cousins are adopted and many of our close friends have adopted children. We have witnessed the miracle of adoption and how it filled these families with love and happiness.
In 2008, we were fortunate to adopt our son Henry. He is the most amazing gift and blessing. We treasure every moment with him and cannot explain how much we (and our families) love him and how much joy he brings to our lives.
We maintain contact with Henry's birth mother. In addition to providing letters and pictures, we also exchanged email addresses and update her often on his accomplishments. We enjoy sharing his growth and experiences, and it contributes to his adoption story.
We hope to add another child to our family. We would cherish the opportunity to share our love and affection with him/her. Henry, who just turned three in September, is also excited about having a baby brother or sister.
We like to do a variety of things for fun. We have a family tradition of picking fruit (strawberries in the spring, peaches in the summer, and apples in the fall), and then going around to our friends and family and delivering the fresh fruit and homemade jam. In the winter, we love to bundle up, drive out to a tree farm, and cut down our own Christmas tree. We enjoy attending live events, including the theater, symphony, and a variety of sporting events, especially baseball, hockey, and college football. Since we are big Nebraska Cornhusker football fans and Paula's father has season tickets, we try to go to at least one game a year. During the summer, Fritz has time off so it is a great opportunity to travel. Some of our favorite memories are from trips together: attending a ghost tour of Colonial Williamsburg, walking through the giant redwoods at Muir Woods outside of San Francisco, learning how to drive on the left side of the road in Ireland, playing in the surf in Florida, and taking a special behind-the-scenes tour of the White House while in Washington, DC. We love to experience new things together.
We both were raised with pets in our homes. Dogs, cats, hamsters, gerbils, birds, and fish were all present at one time or another. Caring for an animal and also having that animal as a friend and playmate were important to each of us growing up. Our animals were not only great companions; they also became members of the family.
Currently, we have a Maine Coon cat named Captain Whiz-bang (Captain for short). Paula named him after a cat in one of her favorite children's books. He is a wonderfully fluffy and loving cat with a gentle nature. He has many dog-like behaviors, including playing fetch with his toys, watching for the mailman, carrying loose socks around from room to room, and greeting us as soon as we walk in the door. He also loves to be in the thick of things. For example, he watches Fritz shave in the morning, assists Paula with the laundry, and helps put Henry down for his afternoon nap. He has definitely enriched our lives and become part of our family.
