How We Will Address Cultural Diversity
Leigh Performing in an Elementary School Assembly

Both of us have always valued cultural diversity as something that makes our lives, and the world, a better place. In college, Chris majored in English with a focus on African-American literature, and Leigh studied ethnomusicology (musical traditions from around the world) in graduate school, taking classes in three different languages. We have traveled to countries in North America, South America, Africa and Europe, and really enjoy learning about other cultures and places.

We will embrace and celebrate the heritage of a child from any ethnic background because we respect and appreciate all cultures and traditions. To help a child maintain a connection with his/her background, we will build the child's heritage into our lives by focusing on foods, music, books, art, holidays and traditions. Since we live near Boston, we will likely be able to visit places and events that relate to the child's background.

We interact with adults and children from diverse cultures and places all the time, and will make sure that the child is able to do the same. Our group of friends includes people of Latino, Asian, African, Indian and African-American descent, and we are making more connections with adoptive families who have children from diverse backgrounds. We will be happy to talk about identity and cultural diversity at any time, and look forward to helping your child learn about, and take pride in, his/her own background.

How we will Tell the Child About His/Her Adoption
Walking Through the Woods on a Cape Cod Vacation

Your child will always know that he/she was adopted, because we plan to be open and honest about everything. In fact, we plan to celebrate and honor your child's history by telling them about you and by making connections in our lives with your child's background. We hope to stay in touch with you by sending letters and pictures, and by having an open adoption, so that your child will always have a direct connection to his/her roots.

Talking about adoption is an important and delicate process, and we are ready to provide your child with the information and support that will help to make them feel secure. We will talk openly about your child's background, so there is never any mystery or confusion in the child's mind about where he/she came from. At each stage in their development, we will answer questions and talk about any issues that your child brings up while respecting your wishes and sharing only the information you are comfortable with. As parents, it will be our responsibility and privilege to tell your child's adoption story and to help him/her develop into a happy and grounded person.

Our Leisure Time
Chris' Favorite Spot on the Planet: Maine's Baxter State Park

We love each other very much, and spend most of our leisure time together. Everything is more fun when we can share it with each other! We have a great time going to the beach, and we enjoy living near Boston so we can go into the city for meals with friends, Red Sox baseball games, and all kinds of concerts. Most often, you will find us having fun at home where we take walks, play and listen to music, watch movies and TV (especially during baseball season!), read, and cook together.

The two of us have our own hobbies, too. Chris loves the outdoors. He enjoys hiking and backpacking at nearby state parks and mountain ranges. He also plays the guitar and is teaching himself some of his favorite songs. Leigh plays West African music (mostly drums) in a group that practices every week and performs around the area. She also enjoys photography and tries to take interesting photos of people and scenery.

We look forward to sharing everything with your child, especially reading, playing and listening to music, playing games, and enjoying sports and other outdoor activities. Boston's Cartoon Festival and music, dance and theater performances will be so much fun-- both for your child and for us, as we feel the joy of introducing your child to each new and exciting thing.
