Our Lifestyle
Autumn in the Park

We balance our life between a full schedule and a healthy dose of down time. We love spending time with friends, going to outdoor concerts and ballgames, exploring museums, and walking the local arboretum. Adrianne is a stay-at-home mom, and during the week when Scott's at work, she and Annie fill their days with library story time, play dates, and classes at a wonderful nature center. These are all things we can't wait to share with another child! While we are lucky that our community offers many activities to choose from, we greatly value free time for ourselves, and especially for kids. We believe that kids learn best when they have time to explore and invent, and we plan into our days a lot of unstructured time to play with toys, draw, read, or explore nature.

A Fall Picnic in the Woods

After a busy day of work and school, we always gather together and eat dinner as a family, saving time afterwards to play games and read books. This time rejuvenates us and, we hope, will teach our children to value time set aside for themselves. We dream about sharing evenings like this as a family of four.

How We Met
We Love the Beach!

The summer before our senior year in high school, when we were 17, we met at a month-long program at a state college. The program was focused on environmental issues, and we took classes together and went on field trips to learn about local wildlife. We became fast friends and hung out together a lot. We especially remember a great field trip to an animal rescue center that had found tiny turtle eggs along the side of a road near the beach. When they hatched, our class took the baby turtles out in boats to free them into the wild. It was an exhilarating day on the water sharing something that felt so important, and in addition to helping the turtles we also had time to jump off the boat for a swim. By the end of our month together we had fallen in love and spent our last hours together talking intently about how we were going to see each other again - our homes were 100 miles apart and neither of us owned a car. Our parents must have seen our love-struck faces and understood at once. They put up with huge long distance phone bills and weekends borrowing the car, we wrote hundreds of love letters to each other and our long distance relationship grew and grew until we finally went away to college together. A year after graduation we got married. The rest is history.

What Makes Us Unique
All Ready to Hit the Streets Trick-or-Treating!

We show each other a lot of kindness - we believe that small gestures can express love. This is something we want to teach our children, too. Adrianne took a short trip by herself recently, and before she returned home Annie and Scott cleaned the house from top to bottom, arranged some flowers around the house, then picked her up at the airport and took her out for dinner. When getting everything ready, Scott explained to Annie that making the house look nice shows Mommy how much we love her and lets her relax when she gets home, without having to worry about cleaning up.

We also make a point every day when Daddy gets home from work of running to the door to greet him. If he's had a long day, this excitement can melt away his troubles. It's a simple way we can show love and gratitude for each other and Annie has taken our example to heart. She has started a ritual whenever anyone comes or goes from our house, she yells "family hug!" and wants us all to embrace while she snuggles in between our legs. It is touching and adorable and inevitably makes everyone smile!
