Our First Adoption Experience
The two most memorable moments of our adoption were meeting our birthmother and being at the hospital when Ethan was born. Our birthmother arranged for us to be brought into the nursery within minutes of Ethan's birth, and we'll never forget the immediate love we felt and the tears of joy we wept. Saying good-bye to our birthmother and her family was bittersweet because she told us how secure and comfortable she felt with us as her son's parents. We both knew in our hearts that Ethan was going to be loved by two mommies forever. Our adoption experience, from waiting to be matched with our birthparents, to meeting Ethan's birthmother and her extended family, was very positive and life affirming. We keep in touch with our birthmother, and are grateful for her selfless gift to us.
Our Strong Marriage and What it Means to Be a Family
Our 11-year marriage grows stronger every day because we place a high priority on good communication, supporting each other, and our faith. Our personalities are a good match, too: Margaret is optimistic about almost everything, even when the going gets rough, and Alan is very patient, and his personality is a good mix of seriousness and fun. We feel the success of our marriage is no surprise: it’s rooted in our childhood experiences, and the fact that both of our parents have been married for over 40 years. We believe that our strengths and values make us good parents, and we hope to pass along to our children what we’ve learned from our parents.
We place a high priority on family time, and try to make plans to do a fun event together every weekend. Sometimes we do simple things, like sing songs, play with a new toy or make creations out of play dough. If a special show comes to our town, we like to take Ethan to see it: for example, we recently took him to see performances of Clifford the Big Red Dog and Elmo’s Coloring Book with live actors singing and dancing on stage. We make time for family vacations at least twice a year, and last summer we spent a week on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, exploring the beaches and introducing Ethan to the ocean. This summer we vacationed on Nantucket and Ethan loved splashing in the surf, making sand castles on the beach, and picking up sea shells.
Why I Want a Brother or Sister
Ethan on His Rocking Horse
My name is Ethan and I’m 2 years old. I love my mommy and daddy, and Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles and Cousins, and all my friends, and of course my cat Vern very much. But I’d really like to have a little brother or sister to love, too, and to laugh and play “getcha” with, so we can chase each other around, and run really fast, which I like to do.
If I had a little brother or sister, we could play with all my toys, and watch my favorite videos, Elmo and Clifford the Big Red Dog. At lunchtime, I would share my macaroni and cheese, and when it’s time to take a nap, I’d cuddle up with my little brother or sister and share my teddy bear and my “blankey.”
When my new brother or sister is adopted, mommy said we can go to the playground together and play on the swings and slides. I can’t wait!! I will be a really good big brother!
