How We Met

Our friend, Roxanne, met Ami when they shared a house at the beach with a bunch of girls. She met Henry the winter before while skiing. One weekend, Roxanne bumped into Henry and said, 'I've got a girl for you!' She thought we'd make a good match. She was right! She set us up on a blind date in the summer of 1995. Even though we had both had bad experiences on blind dates before, Roxanne convinced us that we should meet ("At the very least, you'll know someone else in town and maybe you'll become friends," she told us.). Well, we got along great. Henry was a bit nervous so he spent most of the night talking and talking and talking but Ami thought he was handsome and his nervousness was cute. Within three months we were spending more time together than apart! Almost a year later, Henry proposed to Ami at a restaurant overlooking the water. It was so romantic. We can hardly believe that 10 years have passed! To celebrate, Henry took Ami for a wonderful weekend in New York City. We walked all over the city, exploring Little Italy, the Village, Soho, and Time Square, went to a Broadway show and had an incredible dinner but the best part was just being together. We're truly best friends - so Roxanne was right all along!

Our Adoption Story

The phone rang at 7am and immediately Ami knew - American Adoptions was calling to say Rochel was in labor. Henry, on the other hand, had no idea. "Huh? Who is this?" he said groggily as Ami reached over his shoulder and took the phone. "Rochel is heading to the hospital! It's time!" Ami heard.

Getting tickets, packing, it was all a blur. That is, until we got on the plane. Then, we think, time stood still. No, it went backward. We were going to meet our daughter and we could barely contain ourselves! The flight, the car rental, the phone calls, all happened without our full attention. When we walked into the nursery, though, everything changed.

There were two babies under warm yellow lights and another baby in the arms of a woman in a rocking chair. She stood up as we entered the room. "Would you like to hold your baby?" she asked.

"Our baby?" Ami looked down at her little apple face, peaceful and calm and grabbed Henry's arm - "This is our baby?" Ami asked again.

"Yes," the nurse replied, and with that, she gently placed the most beautiful baby we have ever seen in our lives, into Ami's outstretched arms. Ami could feel her throat tighten as she whispered to Henry, 'Isn't she the most precious baby you've ever seen?' Instantly we felt as though our hearts doubled - one heart for all the love we feel for Jamie and another heart for all the gratitude and appreciation we have for Rochel. She forever changed our lives by trusting us with Jamie's care and helping us become a family.

Our Favorite Vacation Spot

Golfing on Our Vacation in Jamaica

There's a reason they say, "Come back to Jamaica." We've been there 6 times (it was our first vacation together and our most recent vacation together as well). We love the beach, the warm, tropical weather and the calm Caribbean Sea. The laid back, casual manner of the Jamaican people makes it our happiest place to be (other than Ami's parents' beach house!). Although we always go to the same island, our vacations are very different.

We spent one week totally busy from morning to night. Our days were packed with golf, tennis, scuba diving, waterskiing and sailing. On another trip, we spent our days relaxing on the beach, chatting, and reading books while listening to the waves. Maybe that's what we love about Jamaica - it can be busy or relaxing, or sometimes a little of both.

Ami's favorite Jamaican memory was when Henry shocked her with a wonderful surprise. He had made arrangements for us to renew our wedding vows on the beach! Ami had always loved the idea of a wedding on the beach, and he gave her that dream. Ami was totally surprised that he had made all of the plans before our trip, without her finding out. It was the most romantic evening on earth. The sun was setting, our toes were in the sand and we felt like the entire beach was just there for us. From then on, Jamaica has always been 'our island'.
