What We Will Tell Our Child About Their Adoption

We believe in being honest and open about adoption from the beginning of the child's life. Every night at bedtime we will read a book to them about adoption and tell them how special they are. We plan to educate them about their adoption in order to remove the insecurities and labels often associated with adoption. We want your child to know how much you love them, and that adoption is one of the greatest gifts a birthmother can give to her child. Your child will know that you made a loving sacrifice by assuring them of a loving home, a good education and an environment where all of their needs are met. We will always love and comfort your child by supplying information concerning their adoption at an age appropriate level. Your child will be such a gift to our family and will know his/her special story about their birth and adoption.

Education We Will Provide

We want the child to be educated in an environment that focuses on the value of finding new ideas and acting on them. We believe that this type of education encourages enthusiasm and passion for learning. We both agree that success in life is not about salary, prestige or status. We believe that a successful life comes when you are passionate about your life's work and contribute to society.

That is not to say that there should be no educational structure or discipline. In fact we believe that children should be taught how to study and how to find things out for themselves. This discipline should be exacted at home as well in the classroom. Children should be guided toward discovering things on their own and mentored toward mastering the concepts in which they are most passionate. In spite of that, certain curriculums such as math and science should be taught regardless of a child's lack of interest. Alternative ways of focusing the child's effort into these curriculums will be sought if necessary.

In addition, children should be encouraged to participate in team sports or group activities. It is important for children to be confident in their ability to socialize and should be supportive and respectful of others.

Our Leisure Time

With Our Nephew at a BBQ

We like to be active during our leisure time. We often entertain. Although it is a lot of work, it gives us the opportunity to prepare meals that our friends and family enjoy. We usually have two or three large barbeques in our back yard every summer. In between those events we have smaller, more spontaneous parties on our wrap around porch. Everyone likes to come to our porch parties because of the beautiful view of our gardens and the afternoon breeze. During the winter we have indoor dinner parties, but the winter is when we visit friends and family the most. Those are the times when we really get to relax.

We enjoy sitting down after work to watch a movie on a cold winter night. Usually, we pick a movie we would like to watch during dinner. We make popcorn, curl up on the couch and try not to fall asleep before the movie ends. Sometimes we wake up after the movie has ended and the only ones watching the television are our cats. In the summer we have dinner outside. We have an outdoor fire place which we use to roast marshmallows and make s'mores for dessert. Jeff carved Diane a special marshmallow roasting stick, which Diane adores. Then we sit by a fire and listen to music well into the evening. This is very tranquil and gives us a chance to talk about our day, our problems and our future.
