Our Adoption Experience
In 2004, we attended an adoption seminar to learn more about
international adoption. We had done some research online and on the phone, but this was our first seminar. Sitting in the seminar and listening to the heartwarming stories about adoption, it just all seemed to make sense - this was the path we were meant to follow. Little did we know at the time our son had been born on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean just a few days before! We sent in our application and completed all of our paperwork by the middle of the summer.
Then one wonderful fall afternoon, we got the phone call that changed our lives forever. A baby boy in Russia was waiting for a mommy, a daddy and a place to call home. His birthmother could not take care of him so he was placed in an orphanage and made available for adoption. The very next day we received a package with his picture. Kristin nearly tackled the Fed Ex delivery man in an attempt to get the package open as quickly as possible! Our lives were changed in an instant and we were head over heels in love with him. We traveled to Russia to meet him three weeks later and returned to Russia right before the holidays to finalize his adoption. We brought him home shortly before Christmas and he was the best Christmas present ever!
What We'll Tell Your Child About Their Adoption
Since we already have a child from the blessing of adoption, the word "adoption" is a common word in our home. We will continue to emphasize that adoption is a wonderful way to build a family. We hope to be able to tell your child as much about you and your family as possible. We will explain adoption
in age appropriate terms as he/she grows up. We will always portray you in a positive way, explaining that the choice you made was selfless, courageous and most importantly, loving. We want the child to know that they are loved by your family also and that you wanted the very best life for them.
We want your child to understand all sides of the adoption relationship, so we will make sure we explain what led us to adoption, how much adoption means to us and what an emotional journey it was from waiting to be chosen to having them placed in our arms. While we will have not experienced placing a child for adoption first hand, we will do our best to talk about the journey from your perspective. We will explain how difficult that decision must have been, how challenging it may have been to choose a family and how loving you are to realize the very best life for your child was to be raised by another family.
Adoption is wonderful, and above all, we want your child to feel the same way.
What We Like Most About Being Parents
Backyard Fun!
Simply put, being parents means everything to us. Being parents has brought out the very best in us as individuals and as a couple. While it is a tremendous responsibility, being parents is our life's greatest joy.
One of the best parts about being parents is watching our child's natural talents and interests shine through. Since Jackson doesn't have biological ties to us, we just don't know what his natural talents may be. We have learned that Jackson is very creative. He's always loved music and loves to dance. He is quite the performer and loves to have an audience (I don't think you'd catch either of us performing on stage!) While we love to take a spin around the dance floor, Jackson's dancing is on a whole different level of creative movement - he really feels the music!
Another wonderful thing about being parents is learning from your children. Kristin was a self-admitted "indoors girl" before she became a mother. But after becoming a mother to an active son, she learned that playing outdoors can be a lot of fun! Having Jackson has taught Michael that no matter how old you are, it is always fun to go outside and just roll around in the grass and look up into the sky.
