How Adoption Has Affected Me Personally

Written by Andy: Adoption has affected me personally because I was adopted as an infant. I have always known my adoptive parents as my "Mom and Dad". My parents made sure I grew up with the understanding that I was adopted from a young couple who were not able to provide the care they believed I should have. It has always made me feel a little special to believe that my birth parents cared enough about me to have another family take and raise me as their own. As an adult, I still feel special because it never seemed to matter to any of my family or friends that I was adopted. I was always aware I was adopted into a happy family, and I was not embarrassed or afraid to discuss it with anyone who asked.

I was about four years old when my parents adopted my brother, also as an infant. I was happy to have a younger brother brought into our family. He and I did a lot together growing up and I made myself available to help him with most anything he needed. Now as adults, we stay in touch by phone and visit each other when ever possible.

I have always had a desire to be married and have children, and have kept adoption as an option. My wife has always wanted to raise a large family, so when we became unsuccessful at having children on our own, we had no hesitation to look to adoption right away.

Our Daughter

Our daughter, Anna, is two and a half. We met when she was 5 hours old, and have loved her every minute since. She has the roundest cheeks that everyone notices right away. She always babbled quite a bit, interrupting story time or naptime when at daycare. Now, she is reading to the cats or singing her favorite songs, and generally just chattering constantly. She has really picked up on our hobbies and interests, imitating Nancy as she cooks, or identifying some of Andy's cars.

Nancy has introduced Anna to a few movie musicals, such as "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music". Anna loves music, dancing, and watching kids, and she knows many of the dance routines. Of course she performs her own version of the numbers, but she gets most of the moves at the right time.

Recently, while she was watching "Annie", she acted out most of the movie as well as the dancing and singing the music. She even put on a pair of shoes that look like the ones that Annie wears. We were fortunate to record a bit of her performance on tape. It's so neat to watch her while the movie is in the background. Anna also gets a kick out of watching herself on film. We hope she still be laughing when we share the videos someday with her own children.

Our Family Traditions

Roughing it with the Motor Home

Our traditions are some things we just created for ourselves, and look forward to each time. One is that we like to buy a tree ornament from each place that we visit. We have a nice time decorating the tree every holiday, remembering our adventures by the memento. Our tree is so colorful and decorative with our special ornaments! Sometimes, we also buy a magnet for the refrigerator. With several magnets decorating our frig, we can enjoy the memories all year.

Another tradition is Nancy's confections. She bakes and cooks up all kinds of sweets for family and friends. She started this about 15 years ago as a way to share something of herself with those who mean the most, and it is now the central part of holiday gift giving. Most of the treats she makes are first time recipes. The big favorite that must be repeated each year is the walnut turtles. Andy enjoys being the taste tester, and everyone looks forward to receiving their tins of goodies.

We recently bought a motor home, in hopes of starting a tradition of travel for family vacations. There are so many places to see here, and most welcome an RV. We love to just drive and find new places, and now we can take most of the comforts of home with us!
