How We Met

We are the quintessential story of two best friends falling in love...

After college, when we were both early in our careers, we ended up as next-door neighbors in a condominium complex. We quickly bonded over shared interests like TV shows, music, movies and sports, and began to spend time together. We remained "just friends" for almost 3 years-partly because of the four-year age difference (I'm older than Michael).

Eventually things changed when we realized we'd rather spend time with each other than with anyone else. When Michael relocated for his career, I missed him terribly, and finally decided to move as well. We became engaged shortly after moving in together, bought our puppy Virgil (who's now 12 and has been on the journey with us the whole way), planned and had an amazing wedding, and began our life together. It's pretty awesome to be married to your best friend and to journey through life with him too. Our journey has taken us to many places, but no matter where it is we go on our journey, as long as we go there together we are sure to make some awesome memories!

What We Like Most About Being Parents

We both adore children. Kate spent years teaching in day cares and pre-schools, and Michael has pretty much always been a big "kid" himself. We're the "go-to" aunt and uncle, the ones the kids know will put on a show, don a silly costume for a birthday party, the ones who will play games, be silly and work to make them smile. Basically just a couple of oversized kids!

We became "Aunt Kate and Uncle Michael" long before we became parents...the years we spent trying to have our son Jeremy were filled with hopes and dreams for spending time with our own child alongside our amazing nieces and nephews. When our moment finally arrived, our lives were changed forever...

For us, what it means to be parents, and what we like most about being parents, is seeing the world all over again through a child's eyes. It has been a wondrous 7 years, watching Jeremy learn about the world, seeing him accomplish things on his own, from crawling and walking to hitting a baseball and riding a two-wheeler. His curiosity has forced us to examine things more closely ourselves, to take some time and look around as we walk through a park, to ask questions, to find answers to these questions and satisfy his simple need to know things about the world. We've learned to let go of the unimportant things, to embrace the moment and just sing, dance and play...

The time has gone by so quickly, and all three of us yearn so much for another child to complete our family. Someone for Jeremy to teach things to, someone for him to share in his adventures, someone else for us to love, care for and guide on his/her journey through life, someone else to join us on ours. Parenthood has taught Michael and me so much about life, about trying to be better people, about patience, and about unconditional love. We discover new things every day about the wonders of parenthood, the responsibilities that come along with it, and the benefits of being on the receiving end of a big hug and kiss for no reason!

Our Son

Jeremy and Virgil “a Boy and His Dog”

We have a seven year old son, Jeremy. We struggled with infertility and miscarriages for many years before we were blessed by his arrival. Because of the difficulties, we had talked about adoption over the years, always believing it to be a wonderful way to expand our family. Now that we've decided to adopt, our hearts are bursting with love to share, and believe adoption is the perfect opportunity to complete our family. Adoption has touched us as we have met so many amazing people who have adopted. They share their stories openly with us, and we love hearing them. We can't wait to share OUR story as well!

It has been amazing to be parents to Jeremy, to watch him grow. change and learn. He is curious, smart, funny, compassionate and happy. We love being his parents, and we learn from him every day. Jeremy has lots of cousins on both sides of the family, and loves them all very much, but has told us (many times) how much he wants to have his OWN baby brother or sister to share in his adventures. In fact, in his own words, here are a few of the things he's looking most forward to:

"I want to be a big brother because I want another kid to play with. I will teach a boy how to play baseball. I will teach a boy or a girl how to ride a bike. I love Holden Beach and I want to take a brother or sister there. I'll be a grat (great) big brother."

We believe he really WILL be a wonderful big brother. Jeremy has respect for and awareness of other children and their feelings, and people tell us often what a wonderful child he is. Jeremy loves to share his plans for the future with us--he's going to be an airline pilot, a police officer, a part-time race car driver AND a dad! It has been heartwarming to be a part of his dreams, and we long so much to include another baby in our family and share in his/her dreams as well!
