Family That Has Adopted
We feel fortunate that our family has already been touched by adoption. My (Allison) aunt and uncle have four adopted children. Being unable to conceive, they adopted three children from Korea, and one child from Vietnam. My three cousins adopted from Korea arrived in the United States as infants, while my cousin from Vietnam joined our family at age nine. From the moment these people joined our family, they were loved unconditionally. The fact that they looked different
due to their culture was never an issue with our family. Now, as adults, it is so interesting and exciting to talk about their cultural differences. My cousin from Vietnam actually remembers her life in that country and it is fascinating to hear her talk about her past. We often talk about going there together someday so she can see the country of her ancestors. I know my aunt and uncle feel truly blessed to have these four children, just as our family as a whole is that much greater because they are a part of it. We understand the importance of recognizing a baby's culture and ethnicity, and, just like with our cousins, this baby will grow up proud of her heritage. Our whole family is looking forward to our family growing once again by adoption.
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Our favorite vacation spot is Emerald Isle, North Carolina. Allison started vacationing here with her family about 25 years ago, and the tradition continues with all the people who have joined the family along the way. Emerald Isle is a beach on its own island near Jacksonville, North Carolina. It is a very family friendly beach, and it is never crowded. Our family usually rents a beach house which is right on the ocean and we have our own part of the beach for the week. It is so fun to watch the kids roam around and have so much free space to run and play. Now that some of the kids are getting older, and a little braver, it is fun to play in the ocean with them too. On the island, there is also an aquarium we visit each summer. It has a touch tank where the kids can touch sting rays and crabs, and it has a life sized fake alligator that thoroughly amazes all of us. We also like to go to a miniature golf park where we like to get soaked in the bumper boats and race each other in go-karts. We are looking forward to the day when all the kids are a little older to play putt-putt, but for now, it is just so fun to watch them all grow and make memories at our favorite vacation spot.
What We’ll Tell the Child About His/Her Adoption
Kevin and the Boys
We plan on answering any and all questions your child has regarding her adoption. We want her adoption to be an open and comfortable topic, so she feels comfortable approaching us with any questions, concerns, or feelings she may have or come across at any time in her life. We will always emphasize to her that it was because of your love and extreme generosity that she became a part of our family. We will make sure she knows that you made this extremely difficult decision because you wanted to give her the best life possible. We will make sure our three biological children always have the correct understanding of the adoption process, and how the selflessness of one human being enabled our family to grow in size and love.
