How Adoption Has Affected Us Personally (Written by Kim)

I was a teenager when my sister Cara was adopted at the age of 3 from South America. I always wanted a little sister, and her arrival into our lives as an active toddler granted my wish for a little sister, but more importantly gave her an opportunity to have a loving family. Cara always knew she was adopted. She would proudly tell anyone and everyone that she was adopted. She knew that she was "special." She also knew her biological Mom loved her and brought her into the world in love, but wanted more for her and chose adoption so she could have a better life. Cara is an adult now, she is 31 years old. She is as much my sister as any of my biological siblings. I am her Godmother and have always had a special bond with her. We are not only sisters, but great friends too!

I also have a niece who was adopted from Korea. Her name is Kaylee and she is 5 years old. My brother and his wife didn't think they could have more children after their 1st and chose adoption to expand their family. Kaylee has since been joined by 2 more siblings. The entire family honors Kaylee's heritage. She is involved in Korean language lessons and a special children's group in their community for Asian born children so they can learn about and better understand her cultural heritage.

Adoption touches our life as a couple while we support friends and family that have adopted. We look forward to the joyous day that we will be parents too, through the unique gift and journey of adoption.

Family Traditions

We both come from families that are centered in tradition. John's certainly revolved around family get-togethers. Cookouts and outdoor activities were a weekly Sunday event; steaks, brats, and all the fixin's. Holidays and special occasions were celebrated at his parents' home with his Mom, who was an amazing cook, doing all of the preparations.

Kim’s family passed down generations of recipes from Grandma’s and Great Grandma’s. Baking Christmas cookies and birthday cakes were two events most loved. Midnight Mass, winter train rides, hockey games, swim team events, egg dying and egg hunts at Easter time, fort building, Grandpa’s famous piggyback rides, family vacations, including a houseboat trip down the Mississippi and a Mexican vacation are other traditions we cherish.

We have incorporated many of these traditions in our life together. We love to grill out and sit outside for a relaxing lazy afternoon. Kim loves to bake Christmas cookies and decorate the house so that every room is a spectacular celebration of the joyful season.

Our Leisure Time

With Our Dog Shemie

We enjoy our leisure time by spending it together. We love the outdoors and this includes walking our dog, Shemie, sitting on the deck, grilling out, planting flowers, gardening, and even pulling weeds. (Kim's personal favorite) Over the past year, we have been working on landscaping our backyard. It is time we spend together doing something we both love. We are hoping that by the end of the summer it will be our own little nature park. There will also be enough room for a play area with a swing set and sand box for your child to enjoy as they grow. During the winter months, we often spend time in front of the fire watching movies. Spending time in the kitchen preparing dinner for each other is another favorite. John loves Kim’s lasagna and 3 layer chocolate cake, and Kim is a fan of anything he cooks on the grill.
