Our Relationship and Parenting
Mark has a very easy-going personality. He likes to describe me as spunky. We are a very good match for each other and compliment each other well. We have many things in common which made us comfortable with each other from the start. We grew up in the same faith, we're the youngest child in our families, and had similar interests like biking, gardening, cooking and shopping. We share many of the same values; love, honesty and respect are at the top. I knew when we were dating that Mark would make an excellent father just by the way he treated other people. He was always willing to help a neighbor in need and consistently did thoughtful acts of kindness for others and me, even if it was to surprise me with something as small as my favorite candy bar. Another thing that attracted me to my husband was that he was very stable, reliable and self-sufficient, he also found the same true of me. He has a happy demeanor about himself.
We absolutely love parenting, as a matter of fact, we can't honestly say there isn’t anything we don't like about it. Our son Charlie is the light of our lives. I am living a dream come true as a stay-at-home mom. My old career is behind me and I am now doing the most important job of my life. We still have to pinch ourselves at times to believe we really are parents, yet we never forget it was the ultimate act of love from his birthparents that he is with us today. We love, we play, and we learn every day. Not only is he learning from us, we are learning from him. It's wonderful to live through the eyes of a child. It has been such a great experience to watch him grow and develop into the person that he is. He has given us so much pleasure and we would love to share the same experience with another child.
Our Adoption Experience
After going through infertility treatments and the heartbreak of several miscarriages, we turned our desire to love and
parent a child through adoption. Adoption has been the single-most significant event of our life. God blessed us with the opportunity to become parents to a very special little boy. The most memorable day in our life was walking into the maternity ward and seeing the most precious gift in the world wrapped in a blanket. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't give thanks for his presence in our lives as well as the choice that his birth parents made for him. Parenthood has turned out to be more than we ever dreamed it could be.
Our Points of Uniqueness
Come Ride with Me, Vacation at Busch Gardens in Florida
We feel we are very blessed to be at a place in our lives where major struggles are behind us. Many couples are burdened with paying off student loans, saving for a home, making car payments, etc. Fortunately we are in a position that allows Sandy to stay at home and enjoy her dream of motherhood, while providing a loving and nurturing environment for our son.
Once a month we go to our nature center and our botanical center for fun learning activities. This usually includes a book being read to the group of children, a topic related craft activity (this month it was frogs and tadpoles at the nature center and sunflowers and fact related things about them) and a snack related to the topic in some clever way. He recently went to a kinderkonzert at the symphony and to a play "Year with Frog and Toad" at the children's theatre. He takes swimming lessons, and plays toddler t-ball and soccer through our wonderful Park and Recreation department. We know this sounds like a lot, but we just wanted to convey the opportunities and exposure the next child would have as well, plus Sandy is with him at these activities, which is a big plus to being a stay-at-home mom. This September he will be in school three half-days which will give some extra quality time to another child.
While we live in a metropolitan area, we have wonderful opportunities to get away from it all. We often take long weekends to relax at the cottage owned by Sandy's sister. It is very peaceful with the beauty of nature all around. We have fun taking walks, fishing, swimming and boating. While Mark moved from the family farm in upstate New York, we still visit this area and appreciate all that farmers do for us. Our son loves seeing cows and other farm animals, and getting rides on a big tractor. We have also been blessed by having close friends that let us use their beach home if we want to get away to sunny Florida. Here our son loves looking for seashells, building sandcastles and chasing birds along the beach. We thank God for all the many blessings that we have.
