With the adoption of our son Timo in February 2007, our biggest wish has come true. We always planned to have a family with children. Even when it turned out that we are not able to have children the natural way, it has always been clear that we do not want to spend our life alone. Therefore we decided to adopt a child. We took our son Timo into our arms when he was one week old. This day has been one of the happiest in our lives. At last, we were a little family. Our parents have also been very happy to become grandparents. Meanwhile Timo is 2 years old. The past 2 years have been wonderful and exciting for us. It has been our deepest wish for years to have two children. Timo would as well be very happy to have a brother or sister to play with.

We love to spend our free time together and just do things. Since adopting our son Timo, the three of us have been discovering the world together. Our biggest wish is, to do this as four in the future. We are already looking forward to sledding in the winter, having snowball fights and building a snowman with the children. In the summer, we would like to go on cycling trips together, go swimming, to the zoo or to the seaside to collect shells and to build sandcastles together. We have always enjoyed the preparations for the traditional celebrations a lot. Together with the children, it will be even more fun to paint Easter eggs or to bake cookies for Christmas and to decorate the Christmas tree.

In our free time, we often visit our parents and friends. Petra has two godchildren of 4 and 6 who we meet regularly and who would be very happy about another playmate. Together with the children we go to the playground, perform handicraft work, play games, read them books and sing nursery rhymes together. Our parents would also be very happy about a second grandchild to play with in their garden.

We and our family will give the child love and security so that he or she will feel that our home is the safe refuge in their life. We intend to raise the child in such a way that he or she will learn to master their life independently and with self confidence already at an early stage. To achieve this, we think it is important to find out the strengths and interests of the child, in terms of school, sports, social life etc. and to aid the child in developing these. Furthermore, we think that the contact with other children is important, so that the child will enjoy interaction with other children and not just adults. The child should also learn to be responsible for his or her own actions and to respect other people. Instead of telling the child what he or she may and may not do we intend to explain to the child why something is allowed and another thing is forbidden and we would also take the child's opinion into account. Furthermore, we intend to teach the child social and moral values such as helpfulness, honesty and reliability. In the bringing up of the child, we intend to be role models. We are both baptized Christians and we would like to have the child baptized, too. We will always support the child in achieving his or her goals and dreams, morally as well as financially.

Meeting with Our Adoptive Families

Our son Timo is African American. We would like to adopt again a child with a different skin color. We and our family believe that all human beings are equal and that the skin color is merely one of many distinctive features. Of course, we are aware of the fact that adopting an African American child will mean facing different demands. For this reason, we got in touch with an organization of adoptive parents. This is an organization of families which have adopted mostly African American children from the USA. We are taking part regularly in the meetings and it is always fun to see all the kids. To our mind it is important that we and our children will have regular contact to adults and children of different nationalities and skin colors so that the child can see that there are other children who have been adopted and who have a different skin color. To explain the topics of adoption and different skin colors, we will also use books and toys. Moreover, we would like to collect pictures and letters about the child's adoption history and later use those to talk to the child about his or her background and origin and about the adoption altogether.
