Our Experiences with Adoption
I (Dana) was adopted at birth. Both my brother and I have always known we were adopted; it was just something we grew up knowing. My parents were very clear in explaining how we were special; our birth mothers chose adoption for us because they could not care for us and wanted the best for us. We grew up with a strong awareness of the sacrifice that birth mothers make for their children.
In 2000, Billy and I adopted twin biracial boys. After numerous attempts at conceiving, we were told that getting pregnant would be extremely difficult without medical intervention. Billy and I chose to adopt instead, I had my own experience as an adoptee and it just seemed to be the right path for us. Our first adoption was an awesome experience. We met their birth mother 3 weeks before the boys were due and were so struck by her selflessness. No matter how difficult her decision was, she was absolutely determined to give her boys a better life. We will always be in debt to her, she is a part of our family and we love her. Our boys also have always known they were adopted, we have been open about their arrival, their ethnic background and how special they are.
Our Lifestyle
These days, our lifestyle revolves around the kids. During the week, after Dana picks them up from school, we work on homework, spend some time outside, usually riding bikes, and then we get ourselves to practice for gymnastics, baseball, it just depends on the season. Weekends are great family time; we get up and make breakfast together, plan our activities for the day, and then head out. We also go to church and depending on the weekend, head to see grandparents or cousins nearby. We like to stay active, so we try to swim, bike ride, or take long walks in the evenings. We know soon enough that they will be all grown up and want to enjoy every moment we have with them.
Our Cultural Heritage
Dana and Billy
Dana was adopted into an Irish and Hispanic family. Her biological mother was Puerto Rican and her biological father was white. Dana has enjoyed a fantastic mix of cultural experiences growing up, her grandparents had large families and regularly gathered at their Mexican restaurant for large reunions full of great food and great people. Dana’s father's family lives farther away, but when we were able to get together, we enjoyed the time together. Dana has always appreciated the mix of cultures; she thinks it has made her upbringing more interesting.
Billy was raised in the military family. His dad was Army, so he spent time just about everywhere and with all kinds of cultures and ethnicities. He has some American Indian in his background as well. When you are in the military, you tend to share holidays and other occasions with your military family when you are stationed far from home. This helped Billy experience many different holiday traditions from a wide range of people and cultures.
