Our Most Memorable Moment Together

In April 2007, we spent 10 days on a mission trip in the Dominican Republic. In the time that we were there, we met so many people, most of which were children. At the time, we had been trying to get pregnant for a year and it was so special for us to spend so much time with all of the children in the neighborhood we stayed in. The kids ranged in age from a few months old to teenagers. We also had the opportunity to meet Audelina, our sponsored child. We got to spend more than 2 hours with her and her mother and still have the pictures that she colored for us. The entire trip was memorable and we have so many special memories of the kids that we became very close with. We brought toys and games with us and when we went out into the street one night to play with a few of the kids, all of a sudden there were dozens of them, all wanting to play. We stayed out there for hours and got to have some wonderful memories made. We had been talking about adoption and on that trip was when we both realized how eager we were to have children and saw how beautiful all children are. We still have contact with some of the families there and every time that a mission team goes back there we get updates on all of the children. All of the families there know about our decision to adopt and are so eager and excited when we give them updates.

What it Means to be Parents

Being parents is something that we both have wanted for a long time and since we have been married we have longed more for that opportunity. Our family and friends sometimes tease us because they tell us that we have so much planned out and have thought of so many things, that now we just need a child! We feel that being parents is a challenging thing but yet is the most rewarding. We feel that being parents means encouraging your child, giving unconditional love, and showing them that we will be there no matter what. We feel that being parents means helping them through life and giving them the tools to make positive decisions, but yet to allow them to make their own decisions. We are looking forward to parenting when your child is young, but also look forward to watching them grow and become the adult that they are meant to be. We both feel that the relationships that we have with our families will help us to be the best parents that we can be. We have both learned a lot from the way that we were brought up, and have talked about the strengths and weaknesses from both of our childhoods.

Talking About Adoption with Our Child

With Our Sponsored Child Audelina and Her Mom Joanna in the Dominican Republic

We both feel that we want to be as honest as possible with your child about who they are and where they come from. This is something that we have thought a lot about and both agree that it is one of the most important decisions we will make. We want to tell your child, above all else, how much you love them, and how much we love them too. We feel that the timing depends on the child, and that it is something that we will discuss as a family when we feel the time is right. We will tell your child about you and that you wanted them to have all that life has to offer. We know how much you love your child. We want you to know that we will never forget that and will make sure your child knows how you feel about them. We feel that adoption is an amazing gift between adoptive parents and birth parents and want to share that with your child.

We will discuss adoption openly with your child, as a family. As much as adoption will be part of their identity, we believe that it is something that should be looked at as a positive thing. We want them to know that they are a wonderful part of our family and we hope that we will have as much information as possible to share with them about you.
