How We Met
We met when we were very young, and we both decided to join a running club. Amy was 14 and Jay was 16. We never imagined at the time that we would be together 11 years later. We became friends over the next few years and we both dated other people. Amy likes to say that Jay dated all of her friends and half her family. Through these years though, we became closer and closer. We would talk for hours and had so much in common in how we viewed life and family. We started dating when Amy was 16 and Jay was 18. Jay asked Amy over the phone if she thought it was time they started dating and she said she wasn't sure because they were such good friends. He felt a little defeated, but the more Amy thought about it, the more she thought it was a good idea! We ended up holding hands while we were watching a movie one night. We were best friends when we began dating and we are still best friends 9 years later. We dated for 3 years and became engaged after Amy's first year of college. We were married the next year and 4 ½ years later could not ask for a better marriage or relationship.
Our Leisure Time and Volunteer Work
We spend a lot of our time going to family events! Just recently we went out to eat with about 20 members of our family and then went over to Amy's aunt's to celebrate the birthdays of Amy's uncle and grandpa. Sometimes we go to choir concerts or sports events to support our sisters. We also have a large group of young married couples at our church that we spend time with. One of our friends owns a restaurant and we hang out there. Amy plays Bunco once a month with the girls from the group. Amy has a lot of hobbies! She rotates which one she is involved in at the time. Right now it is scrapbooking. She also likes to paint and bake specialty cakes and cupcakes. Amy loves to read. She likes historical fiction and Jane Austen books. She also likes a good romantic thriller. Jay likes to play Playstation 3, especially the football games. He also has accumulated a large coin collection over the past several years. Every once in a while, he gets adventurous and tries to experiment with new dishes in the kitchen. (They usually turn out pretty well.) We will often just take a ride around the area. We find we communicate best riding around talking about current events or our future.
Jay's mom is the Administrative Director for our local chapter of the American Red Cross and we are both disaster volunteers for the organization. The Red Cross provides relief services for disasters such as fires, floods, tornados and hurricanes, as well as getting messages to military personnel. We help work the annual fundraiser and we help out in times of local disaster. We volunteered to work at the shelters after Hurricane Katrina and Jay has handed out water and supplies to surrounding areas after tornadoes destroyed many of the homes and businesses. We are also involved in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Race for the Cure as Amy's mom is a breast cancer survivor.
Our Pets
Our Schnoodle Delta
Jay brought Amy a tan curly haired long-legged puppy on Valentine's Day a few years after we had been dating. She was a two month old Schnoodle, half miniature Poodle-half miniature Schnauzer. We named her Delta and she has been a part of our family for six years now. She is so sweet and loveable. She loves new people and lots of attention. She used to be very hyper, but has mellowed in her older age. She still loves to play fetch though. She will play forever we think. She's always outlasted us! She's a medium-sized dog, but will stand up to any dog that gets in her way. Delta's very independent.
Belle became a part of our family about three years ago. Jay had wanted a Catahoula for awhile and it is the state dog of Louisiana. She is a beautiful dog with blue eyes. She also loves new people and is more laid back than Delta. Belle loves to run around and wrestle with Jay. Belle and Delta love to chase each other around. They have both provided us lots of love, laughter and exercise over the years.
