Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other

About Mike: I love Mike's humor and playfulness. He is never afraid to show his silly side and I can always count on him to make me laugh. Mike has never met a stranger; people are always drawn to him. He has a kind and generous heart and is always a tender caregiver. Mike is also a wonderful "dad" to our cats. He plays with them, gives them love and affection and helps them when they don't feel well. He is my soul mate, the love of my life, and I am lucky to have him in my life.

About Colien: When I first met Colien, I knew she was successful at her job and it was her intelligence that attracted me to her. But after I got to know her more, it was her kindness and generosity towards others and closeness to family that I fell in love with. Whether it is helping her grandma with the little things around her house or lending my mom a hand during family gatherings she is always considerate of others. People just like being around her.

How Adoption Has Affected Our Lives

Colien was not raised by her biological father. Her biological father was killed in an unfortunate accident when her mother was still pregnant with her. However, her Mom and Dad were married when she was two years old. At a very early age, her parents shared the story of her biological heritage and made her understand how special that made her relationship with her dad.

In spite of having no biological connection to him, there is no doubt in any way that he is Colien's father. Whether it was curling her hair before bedtime when she was little, or being there for late night talks when she was a teenager, he was always a father to her. He has been there for all of the events in her life, big and small; chaperoning class field trips to the zoo, taking her and her sister fishing, watching old movies, putting band aid's on her knees when she fell down or walking her down the aisle when she married the love of her life.

Colien's relationship with her dad made the decision to adopt an easy choice for us. He has taught us both that a biological connection is not required to be a parent. Instead, he has shown us what we already knew; parenthood is about providing a child with a loving home, support, and encouragement.

What We Do for Fun

Our “Furr-babies” Gigi and Coal

Our favorite thing to do for fun is spend time together around the house. We love to cook together, especially grilling out and eating on the back deck. We also have a big front porch where we sit together, talk, read and chat with the neighbors. We have a large yard and gardening is something that we both enjoy.

We have get-togethers with friends, where we watch movies, play cards and board games, or simply sit around talking and getting caught up. Most of our friends have children of their own, so it also gives us an opportunity to spend time with them as well.

We also enjoy spending time spoiling our cats, Gigi and Coal. They enjoy play time and then cuddling up with us at night.

The Isle of Palms is our favorite vacation spot. It is a resort island right outside of Charleston, SC. We went there for our honeymoon and have gone back every year since. We have also taken several other vacations over the years, usually with family and friends. We have been to Hawaii for a friend's wedding, Chicago for another friend's wedding and Las Vegas, Phoenix and Orlando with friends. Our first vacation together as a couple was to St Lucia. We also spent a week on Sanibel island on a family vacation with Mike's family.

We love to travel and see different parts of the world. But the one thing we always like to do, no matter where we are, is spend time together and relax.
