What it Means to Be Parents and Our Strengths
Pete is the parent (and Deana the step-parent) of two wonderful children, a boy and a girl, so we know firsthand the importance of being a role model for young people. Samantha and Christian are both good natured, respectful, morally sound and educated individuals, each with their own unique personalities. Our daughter, Sam, is beginning her college career and is a star athlete. She is extremely personable and is very thoughtful to her family and friends. Our son, Christian, is in the second grade and although he is extremely outgoing, he is more into playing Star Wars games or with his Pokemon cards.
We would like to think that they are both so wonderful because of their upbringing; the lessons they have learned from us as parents; and, the values we brought to the family from our parents. Being parents means everything to us. From the first few months of our relationship, we agreed upon the importance of raising children. Christian and Sam add so much joy to our lives, but we only get to be part-time parents to them. We long to share the day-to-day joys and struggles that come with parenthood.
Our biggest strength as parents are the lessons we have already learned with Sam and Christian. We have a love of life, learning and humor that will make us great parents to your child.
Volunteering for a Charity
We both volunteer for an organization called Angel's Wings, which was started by a priest friend of Pete's that takes care of foster children in the days, weeks or months that occur before their formal placement with foster parents.
Pete is an original board member and Deana has volunteered for the last several years. The children of Angel's Wings were originally given a floor of a local hospital that was converted to a make-shift home but the group has now purchased homes to make the children's stay during a very traumatic time a little easier.
We have spent many hours with these children and the reward is to see their faces light up when they interact with caring adults who spend time with them. Reading books, playing games or just holding their hands meant the world to them and filled them with the joy they all deserve. We have also gotten many of our friends involved in the organization and some have even gone on to become foster parents. This has been some of the most rewarding work we have done in our lives - to be able to give something we have to those who do not have that sense of caring, love and belonging.
Our Passions
Hiking in Alaska
We are passionate about living life to the fullest. One way we do this is through our travels. We believe the world is an amazing place with so many interesting people and places. Over the years, we have taken a road trip across Spain; a camping trip to Alaska and a horseback riding trip in Ireland - to name a few. Each place we visit, we really try to become part of the culture. These experiences give us a better understanding of people different than us and of our place in the world.
For example, on one trip to a rural part of Brazil, we were amazed that the residents did not speak a word of English. Luckily we had brought along a dictionary and had been practicing our Portuguese. This experience helped us to understand how hard it would be to move to a new country and not know the language.
You can also see our passion in the way we live when we are at home. We started our own business together which works with government to make it better. The business has been very successful and has given us the ability to show others our passion for improvement.
When not working or traveling, we like to spend family time enjoying our good life - whether it be riding on our boat in the bay or on our horse or fishing in our pond. We are passionate that life is short and we need to make the most of it!
