Starla with Our Nieces on a Day Trip to the Zoo
We have chosen adoption because we are unable to have our own children. We have spent over six years trying to become pregnant and have now come to realize that pregnancy is just not in God's plan for us. At our last appointment with our infertility specialist he told us; "You have to decide. You either want to be pregnant or you want to be parents. " We looked at each other, shook his hand and walked out of his office. When he presented it to us like that, our decision was simple. From the parking lot we scheduled an appointment with the adoption agency. We had always kept adoption open as a possibility but now it is a reality. We have never looked back since and we have no regrets. We want to be the most loving and caring parents in the world no matter how that comes to be. We have both wanted to start a family for a long time and we feel like there is an empty spot just waiting to be filled by children.
Together at a Benefit Dance
Brian Holding a Spoonbill
We have several things that have become tradition for us. Some are relatively new and some date back generations. Our first tradition goes back at least 3 generations and that is snagging. Every spring we spend our weekends on the river bank with Brian's family snagging for spoonbill. The men usually do most of the snagging while the ladies gather round the campfire and enjoy smores and conversation. We have a lot of fun and look forward to continuing this tradition into its forth generation.
Also in the spring is the big Easter egg hunt. In addition to our family gatherings, our community hosts an Easter egg hunt for children of all ages. We have gone for several years now and with the addition of our nieces we haven't missed a year yet.
Next comes summer time and all of the back yard cookouts and get togethers. Every 4th of July our community has a huge parade followed by a full days worth of activities for all ages. At the city park we enjoy a city wide barbecue, coed volleyball tournaments, inflatable playground equipment, and numerous kids' games. That evening there is usually a main event like a rodeo or truck and tractor pull with a nice fireworks display to wrap up the day.
A Trip to the Pumpkin Patch
In the fall we have a few things we try to do. First, we enjoy going to the high school football games and patronizing our local events. There is a huge fall craft festival that we enjoy going to as well. Nearly every member of our immediate families as well as several of our friends and their children load up for about an hours drive and a day of walking. We have the usual smoked turkey leg, "walking taco", funnel cakes, and drinks while we're there. No wonder we have to walk all day. It is a great family friendly event and we look forward to including a child of our own in the festivities. Just before Halloween we go to the Pumpkin Patch. We ride the wagon out into the field and pick out that perfect pumpkin for carving. Again we are never alone. We always surround ourselves with our family and friends and their children for this too.
Our families have dinners for nearly every holiday and Thanksgiving is certainly no different. We have great big feasts basically all weekend long. We also host a Thanksgiving dinner at our house for Starla's family that comes in from out of town. The day after Thanksgiving is probably Starla's favorite day of the year. Like so many other people do, Starla, her sisters, friends, and other family members spend the whole day shopping. While the girls are gone for the day, Brian and the guys spend the day putting Christmas lights on the house and in the yard.
Christmas is a huge family holiday for us. Again it is nearly a week of dinners and family get togethers. The largest one is at Brian's Grandma's house where there are nearly 40 people, all of them family or close friends of the family. We eat, exchange gifts, play games, and the kids usually sing some carols. Both of our families have deep, strong traditions and values that we so desperately want to share with a child. Your child will be welcomed with open arms, hugs, kisses and overwhelming love and support from every direction possible.
We have several hobbies that we enjoy and most of them involve the outdoors. Brian's favorite hobby is firefighting. On top of being a paid firefighter and paramedic, he is also the Assistant Chief of the volunteer fire department in our town. He really enjoys training the other guys on the department and just recently completed his Fire Service Instructor merit. Now he helps train members on other departments too.
Starla's favorite hobby is shopping. She enjoys a good all day shopping trip with her sisters and nieces and they make them as often as time allows. Her favorite thing to shop for, of course, is clothes. Every year Starla and her sisters go shopping the day after Thanksgiving and like so many other people have made this an annual tradition.
A hobby that we enjoy together is snagging. Snagging is a special type of fishing that requires you "snag" a spoonbill (paddle fish). There is a limited spring season for this in March and April. Brian does most of the snagging while Starla stays warm by the camp fire. This is a tradition in Brian's family that started with his Grandparents. Every weekend during snagging season Brian's grandparents, parents, and several aunts and uncles could be found camping along the river's edge. The tradition of snagging still runs strong however we don't camp as much anymore.
