Our Lifestyle

Cooking Together

We are easy going people with a laid back lifestyle. Our view has always been that we don't need to have a lot of things in order to enjoy ourselves. We tend to enjoy simple activities close to home, which allows us to spend quality time together.

We are all "foodies" and enjoy watching the food network, trying new recipes and cooking together. We love to plan fun meals on the weekends and look forward to our family time together just cooking, eating and hanging out. Kevin loves to grill on the weekends whether it is chicken, pork tenderloin or steaks. We also enjoy cooking pasta dishes like lasagna or spaghetti and meatballs, which are Katie's favorite because she loves to get her hands dirty by helping to shape the meatballs. We let Katie help out in the kitchen whenever possible and she has her own apron and set of kid-sized kitchen utensils. Holidays are a fun time with all the extra baking and cooking that we do. We like to make Christmas sugar cookies and decorate them for Katie's classmates as special holiday gifts. We also make Christmas and Halloween goodie bags for the neighbors filled with cookies, fudge, toffee and chex mix. Katie gets a thrill out of helping to deliver the goodie bags and wishing the neighbors a merry Christmas or happy Halloween.

Fireworks are big in Texas and we look forward to the fireworks stands opening up a couple days before New Year's Eve and the 4th of July. We enjoy having family style get-togethers on New Year's Eve and the 4th of July with friends and we usually do an early fireworks show for the kids to watch. We aren't just talking about firecrackers but big fireworks that shoot up into the sky and are the kind you'd expect from a professional show. It's fun to see everyone's reaction and the adults are just as much in awe of them as are the little ones.

When Katie was a newborn we did a tag team where one of us would cook or clean house while the other entertained and cared for the baby. We look forward to working together like this again and both sharing in the responsibilities of nighttime feedings, diaper changes and fussy moments as well as the many joyous moments that a baby brings. As the child grows and becomes more active, we will include them in our family activities just like we now do with Katie.

The main point we try to keep in mind with our life-style is that it matters less about what we are doing and more about doing it together. Even the little things we do bring our family closer together and maintaining a close family is important to us.

Family Vacations

Winter Visit to Canada

We are home bodies, but two or three times a year we go on a vacation or trip. Most of these trips involve visiting our extended families in California and Canada. Fortunately for us, our families live in great locations which are ideal for both summer and winter vacations.

When we visit California, we get to play on the beach, visit Disneyland, visit our favorite stores and restaurants, and of course Katie's American grandparents. No trip to California is complete without going to the beach at least once and luckily the beach is just minutes from Pam's parents house. Katie has her own set of sand buckets and shovels at their house to take to the beach and she loves wading into the ocean, no matter how cold it is. Pam's parents have a heated neighborhood pool which we all enjoy swimming in and relaxing around during our visits. Katie loves anything with water.

When we visit the Canadian grandparents, we get to see the Rocky Mountains, waterfalls, wild life and beautiful lakes and streams. We try to visit at the same time as Kevin's sister and her family. Katie loves getting together with her young cousins and playing with them. Some of the highlights of the visit for the kids are going to the nearby horse farm to pet and feed the horses, floating in a raft in the backyard creek, going for ice cream and playing at the nearby park. During the hot Texas summers, a visit to Canada gives us a chance to escape the heat and enjoy some cool, fresh air and wonderful scenery. With every trip we enjoy, though, we are always glad to get back to our home because that is where we are happiest.

Our Daughter

We have a five year old daughter, Katie, who will be starting kindergarten in the Fall and can't wait to go to the "five year old school" as she calls it. Since about the age of two, Katie has always carried around a favorite stuffed animal or doll and pretended that she is their big sister. She is so nurturing and loves playing big sister to all our friends' babies by holding them, giving them bottles or pacifiers and talking softly to them. She keeps asking when she will be a big sister and wonders why it's taking so long. Katie says she looks forward to holding her own little sibling and rocking them to sleep, holding their hand while they take their first steps and playing and crawling on the floor with them. Katie will have a great time showing books to the new baby, explaining the pictures and practicing her reading skills. She'll be right there beside us to help when we're changing diapers, giving baths, dressing and feeding her sibling. Katie loves to do whatever we are doing whether it be vacuuming, cooking in the kitchen or pulling weeds in the yard. She is a big help around the house and loves to try and do things all by herself. Katie is such an easy girl to please. We took her to Disneyland recently for the first time and after a day of thrill rides and Disney characters, she said her favorite part was just riding around in the rented Disneyland stroller and getting a big lollipop. We've learned that kids don't need lots of fancy toys and activities to make them happy. It's the simple things and time and love with Mommy and Daddy that mean the most to them.
