| Education We Will Provide |
As teachers we view education as one of the most-important aspects of a person's life. By education we don't mean only school, but learning in all aspects. Everything from taking a walk in the woods to gazing into a stream at crawfish is a learning experience and creates a knowledge base for a person to build on. The greatest reward a person can earn is knowledge. This is more than just facts and figures. It is the ability to solve problems, create questions, and think in new directions. It is constantly making mistakes and learning from them. It is knowing that you are capable of great feats and tremendous successes and that the hills and valleys you encounter along the way simply make the journey more interesting. The reward of knowledge gives security throughout your life to live each day as a confident, self-awarded individual who benefits him/herself and the world. Is it the desire to learn and gain knowledge that is intrinsically important, and this is what we will foster in your child, so that school is fun and exciting and a journey he/she treasures every day. Homework won't be a chore, but an opportunity to find out about the world, and school will be one new discovery after another--never a bore for the child of two teachers.
| Acceptance of Cultural Differences |
Jennifer was born in Colombia (South America) and spent many of her elementary years in Puerto Rico. Growing up, her best friend was biracial. Her father was an international businessman, and her family was always exposed to people of other nationalities. She grew up not seeing the differences others do. We want the children we teach and hopefully the one we raise to see people for their character, and the only way to get to that point in our opinion is through education and exposure. Ignorance does not produce bliss but breeds more ignorance, and this is what is dividing and separating the world. If we can learn about each other's cultures and religions, learn about the ethnic rituals and behaviors; then we can celebrate our similarities rather than bemoan our differences. We make specific efforts to learn about other cultures and ideas. We often attend concerts, exhibits, plays, and events celebrating cultural differences. We have friends who are gay, Arabian, African-American, Vietnamese, Korean, Mexican, Puerto-Rican, and Jewish; and our experiences with them enrich our lives on a daily basis. Because we can share our innermost thoughts and feelings with those who are different from us on the outside, we are able to learn that we are much more similar in the ways that really matter. Our experiences as a community of brothers and sisters who share a love of all people and respect for all cultures is what we want your child to experience with us.
Our first show together, married! Jennifer is a ghost which is why she is white!
We love music and theatre. Jennifer is a classically trained pianist and violinist. We have great hopes of sharing these talents with a child. When cooking, she loves to listen to opera and world music and sing along. Her music usually follows the food of choice that night: Italian calls for Verdi, rice and beans will be made to Viento de Los Andes, while hamburgers and chili call for Pearl Jam or Soundgarden. We met doing community theatre and often are practicing lines and getting ready for rehearsal. Tim is known for recording his lines (we always record them together and usually laugh so much it takes forever) and listening to them repeatedly until he has them memorized. Tim has been in the community for twenty years and is sometimes called upon to step in for parts at the last minute. Jennifer tends to do more stage-managing but occasionally likes to trod the boards as well. We feel that the theatre and the arts in general build well-rounded individuals.
Taking part in theatre gives you the opportunity for meeting a wide range of creative people from different walks of life and has given us a diverse group of friends. These friends have come to be a major source of comfort and support for us and are eager to welcome a new family member into the group. This child may be on stage before he/she is out of diapers! |
