Kathy and Patroller Friends at Special Olympics Winter Games
Charlie and Kathy both volunteer their time for various organizations. Kathy is a member of the National Ski Patrol and is trained in first aid and CPR. Kathy & Charlie both volunteer their time with Special Olympics helping mentally handicapped people compete in organized sports. We both participate in various fund raisers for Cystic Fibrosis, Autism Awareness, and Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, and Ovarian Cancer.
We enjoy and value our volunteer time. Kathy has been a member of Ski Patrol for over twenty years. Kathy is also a dedicated volunteer for Special Olympics, both summer and winter games. In fact, she got Charlie to volunteer the first year they met and Charlie has been managing the novice ski athletes race for 4 years!
Special Olympics is truly a rewarding experience. To see the athletes' dedication, determination and pure enjoyment is a joy itself. We are very proud of these athletes, and this is why we continue to dedicate our time and efforts to this great organization.
Kathy also volunteers time at her family church, working at the church fair. She started out working with her aunt and grandmother when she was a toddler and continues to work alongside her mother every year. It is truly a family-a-fair.
We both feel that volunteering our time and talent will hopefully make many lives better. We are very happy with the results we see.
Kathy and Charlie
Our parents are wonderful role models, we learned from the best. We want to share the wonderful lessons that we were taught with the child. We learned that it is important to foster an atmosphere to try things and not be afraid to fail. We learned patience is important. We learned to respect ourselves and to respect others. We learned that honesty and integrity are just as important as being successful and neither should be compromised. We learned how to speak up for what we believe in, but to do it politely. We learned to respect others' opinions even if they differ from ours. We learned to find humor in all situations, especially the difficult ones.
We were taught to go for it, whatever our dream is, to dream no matter how big or small. We found that if we shoot for the moon the least we can do is fall amongst the stars. It was ingrained in us that formal education is so important to be successful in life, but to not overlook each and every day's life lessons.
We remember the fun times we shared with our family. We remember and continue the traditions we grew up with. We don't forget where we came from and we don't take anything for granted. We know that our parents molded us, that our siblings influenced us, that our teachers taught us, that our friends helped to shaped us, that our religion guides us, that society may judges us, that our experiences construct us, that our trials and tribulations challenge us and that our family will always be there for us, no matter what.
We learned that life isn't always fair, but if you miss the pain, you might miss the dance. We learned life is short, too short for some. We learned some words could hurt someone more than a skinned knee, but some words can heal a deep wound like magic.
We learned that life is a gift to be lived in the present, to plan for the future, and to cherish the past. We learned finding friends is easy; keeping a friend is a lifetime job. We learned that dessert is saving the best part for last and sometimes we have it first!
We learned to thank God everyday for the blessings, our family and our friends. We learned when going out into the world, that it is best to hold hands and stick together, especially when crossing the street and to look both ways.
Kathy is of Irish decent and Charlie is of Italian decent. We joked at the wedding it was a marriage of Gaelic and Garlic. Both cultures have strong sense of family, where family traditions run deep and always include getting together to celebrate everything and anything. Charlie is a wonderful cook who learned to blend his Italian traditions with new and interesting recipes. Charlie learned to cook the traditional Corned beef and cabbage for his wife, but always adds a little bit of Garlic! Kathy learned there is more to meals than meat and potatoes! The result of merging the two family traditions makes for some tasty and fun gatherings. |
