In Josue's Room on His Very First Night Home
We have felt very drawn to adoption for a number of years. Our 2 1/2 year-old son, Josue, was adopted and he has been home with us since he was 14 months old. From the minute we saw his photo, we knew he was meant to be with us and we were meant to be with him. During the long adoption process, we traveled to Guatemala when our son was 8 months old. Spending a week together with our son was amazing. Leaving him after that week until we were able to bring him home was very hard. The moment we met our son, our hearts immediately overflowed with love for this beautiful child. Our son is an amazing blessing in every way and we thank God for him every day. We love every minute we spend together as a family and we cannot wait to share our love with a brand new son or daughter. Having adopted once, we know how much love we have to share and what a blessing adoption is.
Our Family Welcoming Josue Home at the Airport
Amy's cultural background is mostly Irish with some English roots as well. St. Patrick's Day is always a family celebration with corned beef and cabbage for dinner and plenty of Irish music. Having traveled to Ireland twice, Amy dreams of taking her husband and children to the land of her ancestors one day.
Mike's cultural background is both Italian and German. Our family treasures recipes from both cultures. Mike's mom learned many of her amazing Italian recipes from Mike's grandfather (his dad's father who was from Italy). As a family, we traveled to Italy a few years ago. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the culture.
Josue's cultural heritage is Guatemalan. As a family we cook several Guatemalan dishes, listen to Latin music, go to the local Latin American festivals, and attend playgroups with families with other adopted Guatemalan children. We are learning Spanish and would hope to be a bilingual family.
Both of us volunteer our time as members of our church ministry. While we both spend time with the young people of our parish, we do so in our own particular ways. Mike teaches 4th grade religious education each week and finds his experiences with the children to be enriching and challenging. Amy is a Confirmation Mentor and works with 9th and 10th grade girls as they prepare for the important sacrament of Confirmation. This mentoring is done one-on-one for about a year leading up to the sacrament. Amy also prepares (often with the help of Mike), cooks and serves a monthly meal to the women and children of a downtown day shelter devoted to women and children who are homeless or struggling to keep food on the table. The opportunities with the high school students during Confirmation preparation and the time spent serving at the shelter bring Amy inspiration and understanding. Amy also volunteers for our son's school and for both high school and college alma maters. We consider our volunteering a family commitment and work together to make each class, meeting, or meal the best it can be. |
