Flynt and Gracie with "Maggie"
Living in the country on a little farm, we have a lot of pets and they are surely part of the family. We have 3 miniature Australian Shepherds, Joey, Sidney, and Daisy. Daisy is a house dog, while Sidney and Joey love the outdoors. Occasionally, we will raise a litter of puppies, which provides endless entertainment! There is nothing like puppy breath! We also have 3 barn cats, Fozzie, Chief, and Mable. Amazingly, the cats and dogs live in harmony.
Our larger pets are our 4 horses, Maggie, Izzy, Katie, and Chester. Usually, we have at least 1 baby horse born each spring. It always brings a smile to our faces watching a young child as a horse takes an apple out of their hands for the first time! Kristy has given riding lessons to children in the past and is excited about teaching children a passion for horses. Kristy has always had horses. It was such a blessing to have grown up with horses. Horses teach respect, responsibility, and unconditional love.
Flynt enjoys taking care of our cattle. We have about 15, including the 4-H animals. The baby calves are born in the spring also, and it is a joy to see the new additions.
| How Adoption Has Touched Our Lives |
Flynt and Gracie After Church
Due to infertility, we adopted Gracie from Guatemala. Gracie was born in July, 2007. She was immediately placed with a foster family.
We traveled to Guatemala to visit Gracie twice prior to the adoption being final. We spent time getting to know the foster family and have grown to love them dearly. Emails and pictures are still exchanged on a regular basis. We intend to take Gracie back to Guatemala when she is about 10 years old so that she can see where she came from, learn about her heritage, and see the foster family again.
Kristy created a "life book" for Gracie to learn about how she came to live with us. The life book includes all known information and pictures of her birth mom, including how much she loved Gracie, but that she knew she financially could not provide for her. It states in children's wording that her "tummy mommy" bravely created an adoption plan out of love for Gracie and the hope of giving her a better life. Also included in the life book are pictures of our time spent in Guatemala, facts about the Hispanic/Mayan Indian people of Guatemala that would be interesting to a child, and pictures received from the foster family during Gracie's time with them. We look forward to creating another life book for this child and sharing with her unique adoption story. If you choose, we would love to exchange pictures and letters with you so that your child will always know you and where she came from.
Our adoption of Gracie has enriched all of our lives. We cannot imagine what our lives would be like had we not chosen adoption as a means of expanding our family. We are so excited about the possibility of completing our family with one more adoption miracle! Flynt's two boys, Joshua (18) and Timothy (16) also live with us and they are very excited to welcome a new sister into their lives and look forward to helping with a new baby, just as they did when we adopted Gracie.
Flynt and Gracie in Our Yard
During our leisure time, we enjoy taking walks around the farm, riding horses, working with Flynt's two teenage boys on their 4-H projects, fishing, and taking rides on the golf cart.
Living in the country provides a great environment to ride horses. It is very relaxing and yet adventurous at the same time. We currently have 4 horses, which are very gentle, kind, and beautiful. Their names are Maggie, Izzy, Katie, and Chester. Kristy has had horses her entire life and has given riding lessons to children in the past.
The family has a golf cart that is used on the farm for getting around with ease. During warm weather, Flynt, Kristy, Gracie, and the dogs take the golf cart around the neighborhood. Gracie, who is almost 2 years old, loves cruising on the golf cart! She sets in the middle with the dogs on each side of her.
There is a small pedestrian bridge over a local river where we love to fish. There are usually only small pan fish, which we always throw back in the water, but it is great family fun. The whole family usually has a contest to see who can catch the most fish in a given amount of time. The winner just gets bragging rights, as everyone goes to the Dairy Queen afterward for ice-cream. We are looking forward to little Gracie getting to reel in her first fish this summer!
