Our Leisure Time

Overlooking Banff, Canada

We enjoy hiking, camping and the great outdoors. We've visited parks across the country and a few in Canada too. It's great to see a waterfall on a tough hike and then spend the evening relaxing by the fire. This has worked well for us, except the one time the tent leaked. We look forward to passing on critical camping skills to a little one like making s'mores and catching fireflies. After we get back, Julie documents the trip by scrapbooking and James edits video and pictures into mini-movies.

We also like to spend time working around the house. We upgraded a few rooms with trim, paint, curtains, and more. In addition, we added a landscaping garden, a flower bed, and a vegetable garden. Sometimes, we turn these into family events like when we helped James' brother remodel his kitchen and do some landscaping.

We also love to spend time with our little dogs, Knipper and Nutmeg, by going on walks and playing fetch. The walks are a great chance to exercise while we see our neighbors and the dogs explore the neighborhood.

Our Pets

Nap Time

A few months after we got married, we adopted a beagle-mix named Knipper. We got a beagle because Julie had grown-up with beagles, and she remembered how much fun she had with them. Knipper certainly has brought fun into our lives as well as so much love and energy. In fact, Knipper is so energetic at eleven years old that everyone who meets her thinks she is still a puppy.

After Knipper had been with us for about a year, we decided to get her a friend. We brought home Nutmeg, a Sheltie, for Knipper to play with. Nutmeg lets us think that we are in control, but we are sure that she secretly thinks she is running the show. But we don't mind because she is the sweetest doggie anyone can have.

Now that James' parents have moved a few minutes away, they enjoy spoiling the "grand-dogs." Knipper and Nutmeg love visiting James' parents and staying with them when we go out of town.

Our Family Traditions

A Holiday Tradition with Our Niece and Nephew

We have a few family traditions around Christmas. It starts early on as we decorate two trees with ornaments while the National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation movie plays in the background. When we grew up, both our parents put our craft ornaments on the tree. We look forward to doing the same with a little one. When the inside is decorated, we go outside and put up a bunch of lights in the yard. We even got one of those machines to get the lights to blink with the music. A little closer to Christmas, we spend the day with James' family and go to his brother's church for a Christmas musical performance. We also go to Julie's mother's house and spend a family day there that always includes building gingerbread houses with our nephew and niece. At first, they would tell us what they wanted done. A few years later, they started taking control of the icing and while it was a little messier the houses got more creative. Now they are practically making the houses themselves, but it is still fun for all.
