Brenda says: "I can't wait to be a mom. I am so looking forward to all the good times we are going to have together as a family. But most of all, I am longing for that first moment when I hold our baby in my arms, and promise to take care of and love him or her forever. I think about that moment every day."
Bud says: "Brenda and I have a strong marriage and partnership, and have become very close through our shared experiences. We have had lots of fun adventures together, and have supported each other through a few tough times. We always knew that we wanted to have children - it was even part of our marriage vows. I think this child could be the best thing that ever happened to us."
Animals have been an important part of both our families for our whole lives. Both of us grew up with dogs - Brenda with a Siberian Husky and then a Border Collie that she found next to a highway, and Bud with a series of lovable "Heinz 57" mutts. We had planned to adopt a dog after we got married, but one day soon after we moved into our house, a small cat followed Bud home. She was the first cat we'd ever really known, and we fell totally in love. She was smart and affectionate, and enjoyed curling up at our feet every night. When she died unexpectedly after only nine months, we were devastated, and moped around the house for several months.
Then Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, and we heard that many rescued animals were in need of homes. At the local Petsmart, we saw a litter of orphaned kittens whose mother had not been saved. Two of the kittens - Sammy and Abby - huddled next to each other for security, but seemed happy enough when we held them, and so the decision was made. When we brought them home, they immediately ran away and disappeared -- it took several hours for us find them hiding inside the recliner! Slowly, they came to trust us, and now insist on laptime every day and take turns snuggling up against us for warmth during the night. Sammy watches television with us, while the Abby is happiest watching the birds outside in the yard. We love those guys, and couldn't imagine how we ever lived without them.
Brenda Volunteers at DC Women's Shelter
Both of us strongly believe that we have been very blessed in this life, and that we need to use those gifts to improve the lives of our fellow creatures on this earth, through both financial donations and volunteer work. We both volunteer at our church, supporting fundraising activities and various church committees. We also were active during the most recent U.S. presidential campaign, meeting others and encouraging them to participate in our democracy. We also regularly volunteer with other local food banks and women's shelters. Our new favorite activity is one we began recently, sponsoring a needy family at Christmas time. We enjoy picking out presents appropriate for each member of the family. We look forward to sharing with our new child the fun of giving as well as receiving! |
