How We'll Address Cultural Diversity
Children, even infants, recognize differences. This recognition is innocent, nonjudgmental and curious in nature. We are actively seeking story books about other cultures to engage our children early-on in open discussions about these differences. There is a wealth of knowledge available to those who seek education. For example, we hope to expose our children to culture and history through the use of mediums such as the African American Museum. Currently, they have an exhibit on George Washington Carver, an important scientist, humanitarian and African American in the 1880s. In this venue, we, as parents, have the opportunity to learn as well. For a more child-like approach to learning, our parents' home boasts a children's museum with showcases of the people and traditions of Italy, China, Latin America and the Philippines. I suspect Grandma and Grandpa will make use of these colorful displays of music, dance, food and games when we visit. By actively learning, and making use of different venues, we hope to raise children with strong self esteem, firm roots in their identities, and the ability to celebrate cultural differences.
How Adoption Has Affected Us Personally
On a Cruise Ship
Brenna's Grandmother learned to drive as an adult. Through the licensing application, she discovered that she was adopted. At this advanced stage in life, she was not expecting this news at all. She still loved her parents but found confusion in their decision to quiet this information. She would be the first to congratulate us on our decision to openly parent an adopted child. With this firsthand knowledge, we are blessed with the understanding of how important a connection to you can be to our child.
Pets Are Important in Our Lives
Puppies
Pets can't talk but they can communicate. They have needs, hopes, and challenges. Pets also give back to us in ways that we don't even notice. Their many gifts to us sometimes go unnoticed. We feel so blessed to have our pets in our lives. Their presence provides a huge source of comfort and a well of love that can never run dry. They also bring a subset of worry especially when they fall ill. Mostly, they teach us about our selves and our wish to be loved and our capacity to return that love tenfold.
