On a Walk with Our Dog Dexter
Tyrone is African American and grew up in the city of Chicago. Most of his family still lives in Chicago, except for his sister, whom lives in Australia with her husband of aboriginal descent and their son. Melissa is Caucasian and has had some unique opportunities growing up. She lived in Granada, Spain as an exchange student during her junior year in high school. She was exposed to many different cultures growing up and was taught by her parents to accept and value peoples' differences. Melissa's sister, Elizabeth's husband, Felipe, was born and raised in Brazil. They have one biological daughter and have adopted their 3-year-old son from Haiti. Since Tyrone is Career Military, we know that we will continue living in very diverse communities. The girls have always had a diverse group of students in their classes, including other biracial children. They don't feel "singled out" by their mixed heritage and feel accepted by their peers. We feel that it is important to continue traditions that both Tyrone and Melissa grew up with and are careful expose our children to both sides of their heritage, as well as other cultures.

We strive to provide a variety of positive experiences for our children. With Tyrone having 30 days of vacation every year, we have the opportunity to explore the country as a family. We have traveled to Disneyland, SeaWorld, Six Flags, and have been to beaches on the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. We also enjoy doing numerous things close to home such as visiting our neighborhood pool, nature hiking through the mountains, going to parks, zoos, and museums.

Our daughters participate in a wide variety of activities. We encourage and support them in their current interests. Olivia is currently participating in "K-Kids" (a kids' volunteer organization to improve the community), karate, and "Team Kid" which is held Wednesday evenings at our church. Allison attends a preschool three mornings a week, and also attends "Team Kid". Allison and I also participate in the Mommy and Me Swim Time at the indoor pool in town. We do monitor both our daughters' activities to make sure that they are not too busy and that they are persuing their own interests. We believe that is also important to have time to just enjoy playing and being a kid. Most importantly, we love spending time everyday with each other as a family whether we're watching a movie, baking cookies, or eating dinner together.

We believe that an education is a valuable asset in today's society. We are both college graduates (Melissa holds a degree in Elementary Education) and will assist your child in developing a strong academic foundation. We intend to provide the opportunity for your child to go to college, and to emphasize the doors that it can open.
Children learn a great deal not only in school, but out of school as well. We are strong believers in going with the "teachable moment" and taking the opportunity to expand the children's knowledge base in whatever they are currently interested in. For example, have visited zoos to learn about tigers and their habitats, seen museum exhibits about how magnets work, and have read countless books in various topics ranging from Rosa Parks to the rainforests. It is important to us that they understand the value of being educated in today's society, and we go to great lengths to provide them with a large knowledge base. We not only tell them how important school is, we show them by attending school functions and activities, volunteering in the classroom, and by sitting down with them daily to assist with homework and reading.
