Parenthood and Our Priorities

Our Family Loves Local Events like the Church Carnival

Being a parent is the most rewarding and fulfilling experience we have encountered. Simple actions such as lifting a spoon of cereal, brushing teeth and drawing a circle are filled with pride and excitement as we see our child develop her own personality and sense of well being. Because it has taken so much work and perseverance for us to become parents, we savor every moment. Even when we have problems like waking up in the middle of the night to a wet bed or cleaning up a cup of spilt milk, we have a positive, grateful appreciation for the gift we have been given.

Spending time together has always been the priority in our life. Before we became parents, we spent our weekends painting, gardening and shopping for home improvements. In our spare time, we enjoyed entertaining, going to restaurants, shows and sporting events. Once Cameron was born our activities changed, although spending time together as a family is still the priority. We've changed our activities to playing at the park, grocery shopping with a rocket cart, visiting the zoo, and going to the pool.

Our Leisure Time

Glenn and Cameron Drawing at the Dining Room Table

Since we both have degrees in Marketing, we are very aware of product positioning and perceptions. As such, brands of clothing, cars, and purses are not important to us. We live a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle. We believe this flexibility will facilitate the adoption process and allow a new child to quickly become part of our family.

Our house is usually neat and tidy. However, we often create huge messes as we enjoy family projects. We can't wait to include a new child!

Our kitchen has survived pizza making parties and toddler created culinary masterpieces. The flour, pizza sauce and cheese have found almost every nook and cranny in the kitchen. We can't wait for our new child to learn to spread the dough into a circle and create a design in sauce and cheese. (Perhaps they will be the first one to get sauce on top of the refrigerator!)

We also love to create crafts in the dining room. We use a lot of glitter, feathers, pom-poms, glue and construction paper. We love to see the concentration and effort that go into squirting the glue onto paper and spreading feathers in the best location. It will be even more joyful to see both of our siblings (our daughter and our newly adopted child) creating artwork together, side by side at the dining room table.

Our living room is an incredible area for children's construction projects. It is common for us to get every wooden block and mega-block in the house and build towers that require our daughter to use a stepping stool to complete. Sometimes, we build smaller buildings and forts around her and pretend that dolls are coming and going to visit her. When our family has grown through adoption, we will be able to build forts for each of our children and they can visit each other, instead of dolls. This family interaction is what we look most forward to!

As you can see, the simple things in life are definitely most enjoyable as a family. However, our playing always has one simple rule, we clean up before we go to bed. Every evening we have a quiet time routine. We clean up our toys and messes, take a bath and relax with a book prior to bed.

Storytelling is an especially fulfilling time of the day. It will be even more meaningful when we have a new child to share this time with as a family. Reading stories to siblings while curled up on the couch with a child on either side of us will be a dream come true!

Qualities We Love, Respect and Admire in Each Other

Lorie on Glenn:

I fell in love with Glenn when I witnessed his ability to maintain a kind, gentle demeanor, even when surrounded by 10 other members of his college track team (including his 300 lb shot putter roommate).

Glenn is the most positive person I know. He has a can-do attitude and is able to overcome any obstacle he encounters or achieve any goal he sets. I admire that he accepts his achievements (like running a 2:20 marathon) as expected outcomes and maintains a modest, down-to-earth attitude.
