How Adoption Has Affected Our Lives
Our Family
We have a wonderful son, Isaac. He is adopted from Guatemala. We were lucky to bring him home at almost 7 months old and he is now three. He will make a wonderful older brother.
With Isaac, we have told him his story from the beginning. We also read him the book Over the Moon, an adoption tale, and we have replaced the characters' names with our names. We have a life book that begins with us wanting and wishing for a baby and is still a work in progress. When we rock him to sleep we talk about everyone that loves him and we always include his two moms in Guatemala (his birthmother and foster mother). We have done this from the very beginning and it is his story - a beautiful story. We have kept all photographs and papers that were part of his adoption process and plan to share all of it with him when the time is right and he begins to ask more specific questions.
We will start the story of your child's adoption from the very beginning. We believe that as you "practice" the adoption story it becomes your child's story in a very positive and supportive way. We plan to answer any questions openly with an emphasis on the love that was bestowed upon them by his/her birthparent(s) by placing them in our arms, and the love that they will receive unconditionally from us.
We will read books together about adoption and address any difficult issues that may come up as well as positive aspects of the adoption. It is truly a beautiful act and we will encourage both of our children to view their adoptions as a positive and profound experience to add to a lifetime of experiences.
Type of Education We Will Provide
Reading to Isaac
With Selena being a teacher and Ross having worked for or around academia his entire adult life, quality education is a tremendous priority to our family. Isaac is currently enrolled in a Montessori school and its effects on his learning and intellectual development were immediate and obvious. It is not important whether the schools are public or private as long as they provide our children the best chance to enrich themselves, provide diverse social opportunities and allow them to succeed in whatever path they choose. Of course, an education comes as much from the home as it does from schooling. We try to make our home life as intellectually stimulating as we can with educational toys and inclusion in tasks such as preparing our meals and cooking. Museums and the zoo also provide different learning opportunities unavailable at home or the classroom.
Cultural Diversity in Our Lives
Selena Teaching
We wholeheartedly embrace cultural diversity. In fact, Selena's entire job is cultural diversity! With our son being Hispanic, we have already introduced many customs into our lives that enhance our family traditions. We love to cook Chilequiles together, a yummy Guatemalan dish. We also have a kite to fly on Dia de Todosantos (all Saints' Day) where we celebrate the lives of all those that have been important to us and have passed on.
Luckily, we live in a very culturally and racially diverse neighborhood and community. The community celebrates differences together and truly learns from one another. Selena's classes are full of culturally diverse students and families. She loves to include her family into the mix and it has enriched all of our lives. We feel blessed to have adopted trans-racially and hope to do it again. We look forward to creating and adding more diverse activities to our family.
