| Our Family and Why We Chose Adoption |
Having Fun on the Merry-Go-Round
We have two children. Cassandra is 5 1/2 years old and just started kindergarten. She loves reading, playing with her dolls and doll house and dressing up in princess clothes. Her favorite things about school are taking the school bus with friends and music class. She is a wonderful big sister and is very nurturing and playful with her brother. She has a fun and gentle personality. She is very excited to have another sibling and looks forward to reading and singing to the baby.
At the Beach
Andrew is 3 years old. He goes to preschool 2 days a week and has really blossomed with the structure. He is a sweet boy who loves to give hugs and kisses. He has an energetic and fun loving personality. He loves playing with trucks, cars and trains and anything his sister does. He loves having a sister, and we know he will love being a big brother.
We want a bigger family and we personally feel drawn towards adoption. Meg had a brother who was adopted, she has 2 cousins with adopted children of other races, and her sister is in the process of adopting children of another race. We feel adoption is a special gift for each person involved. Because of the diversity of our extended family we also want to integrate different cultures into our family. Adoption is a word used for the process, and we will always be open and honest to the child about adoption. But in the end it all comes down to a new family created.
Meg the Poet
We enjoy family traditions and feel they are important for family bonding. We enjoy painting Easter eggs and having an Easter egg hunt. Meg, who likes to write poetry, finds it fun to write a rhyme as to where the Easter eggs may be hidden. This is an enjoyable way to get the whole family involved while celebrating the special holiday. We feel you are never too old for this, and it is fun to watch everyone running around with their baskets. We look forward to the long Thanksgiving weekend as we eat too much turkey and pie. It is also fun to end one holiday and start decorating for another. We decorate the Christmas tree and start pulling out all of the decorations. It is always fun to go through the ornaments and talk about who gave it to you and what the meaning of it was. We also like to take turns putting the ornaments on the tree. Christmas Eve is a special time, and we enjoy decorating cookies and letting the kids decide which ones are for Santa. We always end the evening with Christmas Eve service. Christmas night we have fun driving around to see the houses decorated with lights or going to Washington D.C. to see the National Christmas tree with our extended family. We also have a simple tradition we started on Saturday evenings. After the kids have bath time we sit outside at the patio table in our pajamas and have a snack. It is fun to have a fenced in back yard. We take this time to share our favorite and least favorite part of the week. The kids get excited because each week someone gets a turn to go first and that person gets to pick the snack we all share. We enjoy this family time and always talk about what we are thankful for. We started this because we want the kids to remember a fun tradition that is not just related to a holiday. We want them to know that taking time for them was always important to us. All in all, we spend tons of time together as a family and always find a way to make it special.
| Cultural Diversity in Our Lives |
Cultural diversity is truly astounding, as many different ethnic and cultural groups have contributed to the social, economic and cultural values of our society. It is important that each child learns about their heritage and how all backgrounds blend together.
As a family, we love reading and going to the library. We plan to have books to all read together to show how families integrate cultures and stand out as individuals. We find it is important to highlight the child's heritage, and we will make them feel special as we blend all holidays or special events into our family.
We feel our family is unique as we already have a multicultural extended family. Meg's sister and brother-in-law will also have two children of different races. They are very close and see each other monthly, so this will be exciting for the family to embrace many aspects of various cultures. Meg's sister is excited for her little ones to have another cousin to play with.
We also live in a very diverse community and already expose our children to different cultures. We enjoy festivals in the area that celebrate different holidays and teach our children various ways people celebrate. On our street, our children have already been included at special family events to take part in their customs and enjoy many delicious foods. My daughter especially enjoys seeing all of the pretty dresses the little girls get to dress up in. We feel we will be able to blend our family culturally in a fantastic and exciting way. Your child will always know their heritage and an important part that it has in our lives. We will celebrate as a family all that life has to offer to the fullest. |
