Addressing Cultural Diversity

Just the Three of Us
When children are raised to celebrate ethnic and cultural pride, they generally report higher levels of self-esteem. If our child has a different ethnicity than us, we will commit to recognizing and appreciating his or her cultural heritage. We are fortunate to live close to two major cities recognized for their diversity, which has positively influenced our lives. We live in a multicultural neighborhood and we enjoy celebrating our own cultural backgrounds (Deirdre: Irish; Scott: Irish/Polish) as well as those of our friends and neighbors. Your child will have frequent exposure to friends who look just like them and ethnic pride will be emphasized. We are aware that he or she will face challenges (internal and external) growing up in a multicultural family and we will always encourage an open dialogue to discuss concerns and questions.

Our Lifestyle

Hanging in the Backyard
Our lifestyle could be described as "easy going" and our home life is pretty relaxed. We enjoy doing things at our own pace and don't like to over-schedule. Typical weekdays include Deirdre bringing Mary to and from preschool and managing the household tasks. Scott works at his office three days a week and then works remotely from home two days a week. We are fortunate to be able spend a lot of time together and we cannot wait for to have a new baby to join us. Deirdre works on Saturdays and so Scott and Mary would easily find fun things to do with a new brother or sister. On Sundays, we go to church, read the morning paper, and Mary often catches up on her cartoons. We may work on a house improvement project, BBQ in the backyard, visit with family or friends, see a museum show in the city, go to the beach, or just enjoy a lazy day. Each year, our family travels to a place we haven't been before, and ideally, our travel schedule mimics our day-to-day life. We try to set a pace that is flexible and open to change so that each day is pleasurable and not stressful. It is fun planning these family trips throughout the year.

Our Favorite Vacation Spot

Carribean Swimming
We love going to the beach! Our proximity to the coastal shoreline has allowed us to appreciate and enjoy the many benefits of vacationing there. Deirdre's family has a beach home and it is one of our favorite places to visit. Once the month of March ends, we start planning weekend trips and look forward to smelling the fresh ocean air. Our weekends at the beach are like 'mini close to home vacations' where we have a lot of family fun. We spend time with relatives and friends in a relaxing laid-back environment. Each morning, we bring our beach chairs to shore line, catch some rays, swim in the water, and build sand castles. Occasionally, we even see pods of dolphins swim by!
