Adoption has turned our lives inside-out and upside-down in the best possible way with the arrival of our daughter Emma. Though the journey to becoming parents was painful and difficult for us, the decision to adopt was pretty straight-forward. We both grew up with friends who were adopted and we have family members who are adoptive parents, so we could see how beautifully God brought their families together and it felt right for us to pursue adoption to bring a child into our lives.
Emma is an absolute delight and was definitely a blessing worth the wait! She is the apple of our eye and her laughter, hugs, smiles and songs fill us with indescribable joy every day of our lives. She would love to be a big sister to hold, love and teach a new baby all the important things she has mastered, like how to paint a swirl and kick a ball. Your child would have family members who truly understand their history because they share an adoption story. As we do with Emma, we would always let your child know how much he/she is loved by us and by you - birthparents selfless and courageous enough to choose an adoption plan for your child. And we would share photos and letters with you, marking the milestones and everyday achievements of your child over the years. You would be honored by us and remembered with gratitude for entrusting us with such a precious gift.
We enjoy being with each other and spending time with family and friends. We had the basement finished so we could have the gang over to watch hockey games, football games, celebrate New Year's Eve or just stay in and watch a movie. There's a play room where Emma loves to play with her friends that's seen its share of fun and games. Weekends fill up with get-togethers with family or friends, visits to the park (no matter the weather!), the pool, trips to the zoo and other fun activities around town.
Andy loves sports particularly hockey and golf and he looks forward to being a 'hands-on' dad - you know, the one cheering the loudest at hockey or baseball games, the first one standing in applause at a band concert (or whatever activities he/she chooses). Elizabeth enjoys music (ringing handbells and singing in the choir at church), reading and dancing with Emma. Bustling around the kitchen cooking and baking are activities she enjoys and loves sharing with Emma, who is a terrific helper. Emma can't wait to share fun activities like decorating Christmas cookies, reading, dancing, drawing and painting with your child. We also feel that one-on-one time is just as important as activities - reading bedtime stories, heading to the park or just playing golf in the backyard. The special moments are the ones that catch us by surprise when we're doing ordinary things.
Our heritage does influence our traditions and some of the things that are important to us. We incorporate traditions from all sides into our celebrations. From our Greek roots, we have boisterous gatherings with lots of fantastic Greek food and rich traditions like red Easter eggs, roasting lambs on a spit, and huge Baptism celebrations. Taking from our families that came from Ireland and Scotland we enjoy Irish Breakfast tea and scones, Scottish country songs, and golf. We celebrate our Eastern European heritage by putting out a New Year's Eve plate set with special foods for blessings in the New Year and setting out shoes on St. Nicholas Day to be filled with treats.
Elizabeth has aunts, uncles and cousins who still live in Hungary. She was able to visit with them a few years ago and see the town where her father grew up, the school he attended and the church he was baptized in. We cherish memories of family members and their stories as well as adding new traditions as our family grows through marriage or adoption. Emma has two cousins who are adopted, one of them from Guatemala. We are also part of a diverse group of adoptive families with children of various racial and ethnic groups who get together to visit, share experiences and stories as well as support each other through every stage of the adoption process. The kids have a great time playing and getting to know each other.
