Adoption in Our Lives
A Visit to Maroon Bells in Aspen, Colorado

Garret’s mom was adopted as part of a closed adoption, which was extremely common back then. Her experience growing up with no information about her birth family has helped us understand the importance of being open and honest about adoption. We want to celebrate the story of adoption with our child and never make their origins a mystery.

Emily has two cousins who were adopted, and her aunt and uncle have been a strong source of support to us throughout the process. Their oldest son is currently attending college nearby and we often visit with them when they’re in town. They are incredible parents and we feel fortunate to have them in our lives.

We’re also lucky to have two of our closest friends going through the adoption process as well. Experiencing the joy of adoption alongside good friends is a gift we are incredibly thankful for, and we look forward to the day when our children will get to meet.

Our Individual Strengths
At Emily's Cousin's Wedding

Garret is very intelligent and loves to solve problems big and small. He approaches everything in life with a great deal of persistence and patience, and he gives 100% no matter what. Before his current career, his time in the Air Force taught him the importance of discipline and duty. Garret is someone who cares deeply for his family and you can always count on him to follow through on his word. He’s an excellent teacher and enjoys helping others learn ways to understand the world. He takes pleasure in helping others succeed. He believes people are good and can achieve anything.

Emily is a smart, hard-working person who cares about making a difference in other people’s lives. She is good at growing individuals and building teams to achieve large, complex objectives. Emily is a good listener and finds common ground with everyone she meets. She is creative, artistic, and tends to see the world in a unique way. Emily is funny and is not afraid to be silly.

Our Pets
Elliot & Chicken

Animals have always been a big part of both of our lives. Between the two of us we had just about any kind of pet you could think of growing up, including hermit crabs, newts, hamsters, chameleons, baby chicks and of course, your typical cats and dogs. As children, taking care of pets was one of the earliest ways we learned responsibility.

Today, we get our daily dose of amusement from a scruffy little terrier named Elliot with one floppy ear and a sleepy orange cat named Chicken. Both rescues from the Humane Society, Elliot and Chicken get along well together and enjoy playing every once in a while. Most of our friends have dogs that like to visit to play with Elliot while Chicken sleeps on a perch. Having Elliot in our lives inspires us to get outside and visit as many parks as possible (dog park or otherwise) and we can’t wait to share our love of pets with a child.
