We are so thrilled to have the chance to expand our family, and are excited for you to get to know us better. We sincerely believe that we have so much to offer a child, from the moment they are born, through the rest of our lives. We deeply appreciate your consideration and hope to have the chance to know you.
On a Friday afternoon last year, we received a unexpected and wonderful phone call, that instantly changed our lives -- a birth mother had chosen us. As that life-changing news sunk in, we also learned that she was already in labor! While the shock wore off, we immediately packed up the car (and our dog), and headed to meet our son for the first time. On the long drive, in addition to picking out a name (Benjamin, which sounds equally lovely in French and English), we talked about how excited we were. We both always wanted to be parents, and it was happening! Hours later, emotional, thrilled, and nervous, we pulled up to the hospital. He had been born two hours prior, and we went right to the nursery. He looked up at us, and we immediately felt a deep connection with him, that grows every minute we spend with him, every day since.
We also were able to meet his birth mother. It was so important to us to be able to honor in person her choice of us as adoptive parents. We remain incredibly grateful and humbled by the enormous trust she has placed in us as parents. It means so much to be able to share pictures and updates with her, about our lives together. Benjamin will always know that she is an important and loving part of what makes him who he is.
Given the indescribable way that adoption has changed our family, we are even more thrilled by the prospect of adopting another child. The chance to open our hearts to another soul, is made even better by knowing that our new child will share the bond of adoption with Benjamin.
Mark Twain once said that "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness", and we have found that to be true. We love to travel, Josh's job takes him all over the world, and we plan to continue exploring the world as a family. Rather than staying in resorts or touristy places, we believe in experiencing the places we visit, meaning diving deep into the people, the sights, and the food. The past few years have taken us to South Africa for a Safari, hiking and wine touring; to Lebanon to eat and visit ancient ruins; to the beaches in Haiti; renting a car through south of France; an eco-lodge in Mexico; Scotland and Iceland, and visiting with old friends in Montreal. We have also made an effort to visit places in the US, even if it is just for a weekend; we love big cities like San Francisco and New Orleans, but also relaxing in small towns closer to home.
While we both think it's hard to beat a night on the couch with Netflix, our shared and individual passions drive our lives. Both of us love our work; Laurence is a Pediatrician, and Josh travels the world working for an organization which administers foreign aid to developing countries. To relax, we love exercising, hiking with our dog, or anything that takes us outside, preferably to a beach.
Laurence is dedicated to her yoga (she's also a certified instructor), and loves music and dancing. She is partial to bands from her native Haiti, jazz, reggae, and hip-hop from the 90s. She is an avid reader and has probably seen more documentaries than anyone you know.
Josh enjoys running and watching his favorite teams (Go Bears!). He also love cooking (the spicier the better) and baking, using fresh local and organic ingredients . Specialties and favorites include whole wheat sourdough bread, white wine braised meat, or jalapeño burgers on the grill.
Benjamin loves exploring his world, both inside and out, laughing, communicating with us, and of course putting everything he can pick up into his mouth.
