The 3-Step China Adoption Process

Step 1
The adoption process from China is broken into three parts. First, you must gather and prepare all of the documents needed for your adoption. This includes obtaining criminal and child abuse clearances, spending time with a Social Worker as a part of a Home Study, obtaining reference letters, employment verification, birth certificates, approval from U.S. Immigration, etc. In most cases it takes at least 3 - 4 months to acquire the necessary paperwork. Families may also choose our Executive Assistant Service and let us do much of the paperwork drudgery.

Step 2
Once compiled, your documents are sent to the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA), a requirement of the Chinese government, to be processed and reviewed. As a part of this review, they will read a letter from your family that describes the profile of the child you wish to adopt. Many profiles are very simple: "We would like to adopt a healthy girl who is as young as possible." You may also request a boy, an older child, a child from a specific area of China, etc.

Families are normally matched with the gender and age of child requested. While both healthy boys and healthy girls are available, there are more girls available than boys. Families under 45 years of age who request a child "as young as possible" will typically be matched with a child between 6 and 14 months of age. Families between 45 and 50 are typically matched with children between 12 and 24 months, but should be prepared to accept a child up to 36 months of age. Families over 50 must use the China Waiting Child Program. Sibling groups are generally not available, and twins only rarely available to very well qualified families. Ethnically Chinese families may receive expedited processing.

Children adopted through the China Traditional Program are typically very healthy, with accurate and detailed medical information provided by China. When you are matched with a child you will normally receive one or more pictures of your child; a medical exam that includes a Complete Blood Count (CBC), Hepatitis and HIV test, and some information about the child’s development and daily life. All of this information is translated into English by our Chinese staff, and presented to you. Your family is asked to review the information and accept or refuse the assignment within two weeks. This gives you time to consult with a pediatrician and your family’s support network.

Step 3
Our agency normally receives several assignments at the same time. Once we have all of the acceptance forms from your "Baby Buddy Group" we send them back to the CCAA. The CCAA sends notification to the orphanage responsible for your child that the child has been assigned to a family, and prepares your "Travel Approval" letter. This is a document that is presented to officials in your baby’s home town, and gives you permission from the central government to adopt the child. We normally receive this document 2 - 3 weeks after the CCAA has received the acceptance forms from our agency. Once we have this form in hand, we can then make appointments in China for the processing of the adoption. Families usually leave 3 - 4 weeks after we receive the Travel Permission letters from the CCAA.

Your trip in China normally takes 10 - 11 days, and begins when you meet your English speaking guides in the largest town nearest to your child’s orphanage. During the first week you will take custody of your child, sign a contract with the orphanage promising to care for your child, and adopt your child in court. Once the adoption is complete you will be provided with appropriate adoption documents and your child’s Chinese passport. There will be plenty of time for shopping and cultural experiences. Whenever possible your guides will take you to visit your child’s orphanage and place where your child was abandoned. Our guide team in China is truly praiseworthy. We consider them to be the best in China.

Once you are home, our agency will help you integrate your child into the United States, and to comply with post-adoption requirements. China asks for reports on the progress of adopted children at 6 and 12 months.
