Kazakhstan can provide an unusually powerful adoption experience for your family. With Kazakhstan you travel to the country, visit the orphanages, select a child or sibling group, spend at least 2 weeks them to be sure that the match is right for your family, and then stand before a judge to complete your adoption. Once you have adopted your child there is a one month period during which the adoption becomes final and additional paperwork is completed. Most families choose to return to the United States during that month. Others come back to Kazakhstan for a second one to two week trip. In some cases it may be possible to have your child(ren) escorted back to the United States. Kazakhstan has relatively few restrictions on families (minimum income of $70,000 and no more than 2 divorces per family), and is open to adoption by singles.
Kazakhstan can be found in Central Asia between Russia and China, and is a former part of the Soviet Union. The people are just about evenly divided between Muslim and Orthodox Christian. The government is a stable, secular government, with most of the political power concentrated in the executive branch.
From an ethnic perspective, Kazakhstan is almost as much of a melting pot as the United States. Many people are ethnically Russian, others are ethnically Chinese, and there is a strong Middle Eastern influence as well. While more boys are available than girls, girls are available, particularly in sibling groups. Children become available to be adopted at about one year of age. Children from Kazakhstan tend to have a higher overall standard of healthy than children from Eastern Europe, due to relatively low levels of drug and alcohol use by women.
While the travel requirements more challenging than for some countries, having this degree of choice and a dedicated bonding period make Kazakhstan a great fit for families who want to be completely involved in all parts of their adoption process.
