Finding Adoptive Parents in Michigan

As a woman considering adoption in Michigan, one of your biggest concerns at this point is probably finding the perfect adoptive parents for your baby. It’s a big decision. You’re choosing adoption because you want your child to have the best life imaginable, and now you’re tasked with finding adoptive parents you feel sure can provide that.

At American Adoptions, we’re committed to helping you find a family that you’ll love as much as your child will. You’ll be assigned to a specific adoption specialist who will work with you to make sure you find the perfect prospective adoptive parents in Michigan or anywhere else in the country.

What are you looking for in MI adoptive parents?

The first thing your adoption specialist will help you to determine is just exactly what you’re looking for in a prospective adoptive family. If you don’t already know, she’ll ask you to consider the following questions:

  • Where do you want your baby to grow up? Is it important to you that you find adoptive parents in Michigan? Or do you see your child growing up near an ocean or in a large urban location? American Adoptions is a national agency that works with adoptive families in Michigan as well as in the rest of the country, so your child can grow up wherever you envision.

  • Do you want your child to have siblings? Do you want those siblings to have been adopted too? Would you rather choose adoptive parents that don’t have any children yet?

  • What kind of lifestyle do you envision for your baby? Would you prefer that his or her adoptive parents be musically inclined or place a special value on athletics? Do you want your child to be raised going on camping trips and being outdoorsy, or would you rather he or she take frequent visits to art museums?

  • Do you care if your child looks like his or her parents? Obviously, your baby won’t share any DNA with the adoptive parents. However, some women feel it’s important that a prospective adoptive family share the same cultural background and traditions.

  • What values do you want the adoptive parents to possess? Does it matter to you if a prospective adoptive family shares the same religious beliefs, etc.?

How are Michigan adoptive families screened at American Adoptions?

Once you’ve narrowed down what you’re looking for in people who want to adopt a baby, it’s important to know how all adoptive families in Michigan are screened with American Adoptions. We will never connect you with adoptive parents unless they’ve undergone:

  • A home study, which entails interviews with every family member, a home inspection and background checks

  • Discussions with a social worker to ensure that they are excited and fully committed to adoption

  • Commitments to a minimum of phone calls and photo exchanges with you until your baby is 18 years old

We will never connect you with a prospective adoptive family unless we are absolutely sure they are safe and capable of providing an amazing home for your child.

Michigan Adoption Profiles

Once you’ve determined with your adoption specialist what you’re looking for in families waiting to adopt, she will begin to show you adoption profiles. At American Adoptions, these come in two forms:

  1. Print profiles. Each print profile acts as a brochure of sorts to introduce you to the basics of a prospective adoptive family. These will explain what their home is like, what’s important to them, why they’re pursuing adoption and more. If an adoptive family’s print profile introduces you, you’ll be able to view the other kind of adoption profile.

  2. Video profiles. Video profiles take you into a family’s life. You get to watch them interact with each other, see their mannerisms and learn more about what your child’s life could be like with them.

When you’ve found a family you like based on their adoption profiles, your adoption specialist will arrange a conference call so you can meet them. If you feel comfortable, it’s possible that you’ve found your baby’s adoptive parents! If not, you can continue to look at adoption profiles until you feel you’ve found the perfect fit for your baby.
